The Divine Khilafat and Nubuwwat

In his Friday Sermon of September 13, 2013 the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius, delivered from the Reunion Island, continued the theme of spiritual guidance in an age of material corruption and religious deviations. The establishment of the system of Divine Khilafat to safeguard the Sahih Al Islam in every age is directly linked to the blessings of Nubuwwat-e-Muhammadiyya. As the physical embodiment of such lofty blessings on the Ummah, it is incumbent upon all Muslims to recognize, accept and obey and help the Khalifatullah of their age. Instead of the administrative assemblies of the faithful seeking to control and regulate, define and delimit the freedoms and space of the Khalifatullah, it would be in their spiritual interest to await and follow the Divine instructions descending through him.

Read the Extracts from the Friday Sermon:

“Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of (the consequence of) what they have done that perhaps they will return (to righteousness).” (30: 42).

A Warning to Khalifatul Massih V

Recent Bai’at of some Ahmadis in Kerala, India at the hands of the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius has unsettled the mercenaries and officials of the Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya. So much so that they used all channels possible and methods feasible to deviate these devout Muslims from their chosen path of recognizing and accepting the Imam of the Age!

Family pressure, society pressure, money pressure and employment pressure-nothing could deter these courageous young men from following the path of Allah and moving away from the ‘comfort zone’ of all they knew as common Ahmadis coping with the trials and tribulations of everyday life. Those young men have patiently and bravely put up with all the mental torture, harassment, intimidation and satanic curses showered on them by people who call themselves ‘Ahmadis’. The egregious misconduct of the so-called mainstream is nothing but the satanic manifestations of the extent of their deviance and polar-drifting from the original teachings of the Promised Massih (as). As the Holy Qur'an indicates, it is indeed the youth who will begin to listen to a Divine Messenger when such a one arrives in a society where the Pharaohs and the great men will only seek to doubt and ridicule!

For thoughtful Ahmadis, there is little doubt. Khalifatul Massih V Mirza Masroor Ahmad Sahib presides over the age of spiritual darkness and blatant idol-worship in Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya. Unfortunately for him, the Khalifa does not enjoy the Divine converse despite the pretentions of office and the protestations of the faithful, nor could he produce any shred of evidence of being a recipient of Divine revelations in the last 10 years of his temporal “Khilafat”. It is manifestly apparent and reasonably obvious that Allah (twa) has never appointed him to convey any Divine message to the world in His name and whatever he says and writes is purely what his inner self prompts him to do and everything he says is nothing but the product of his own mind and deliberation (if not that of his advisors)! In short, his ‘ideas’ are as good or as bad as any other human mind could conceive it.

In an age in which Ahmadis have taken their Caliph as “the calf” (Idol), the ‘Samiri’ will suggest only what his mind conceive of (Holy Qur’an, 20:85-97), the Caliph cannot speak with the authority and conviction of an Elect of Allah, a KhalifatullahWhen the Prophet Moses (as) went for a few days to his Lord to do his obeisance and seek Divine blessings, the Samiris of the day digressed back the people into idol-worship. When Allah raises a Moses (Divine Elect) in a new age and that too, a century after the last Elect, he will warn the Samiris of the age. Taking serious note of the mind-games and psychological warfare by the Ahmadi leadership in India, in a special Speech on August 14, 2013, the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius commented upon the incidents against the larger backdrop of the terminal decline of spirituality among the Ahmadis of today.

Syria and the Looming World Crisis

The extremely delicate situation in Syria, where the on-going civil war has consumed over 1,00,000 people and rendered millions into refugees and internally displaced persons, has created a mounting fear psychosis in the entire Middle East that a humongous war is in the offing, especially in the aftermath of the US declaration of intent at military intervention. While the regime of President Bashar Al Assad has come under a cloud of accusation of gassing its own people, the “humanitarian imperialists” who are proactive to ‘teach a lesson’ to the regime also face a credibility-deficit/crisis. As the US seek to use military force in Syria, its dreadful and despicable record of duplicitous dealings in matters of war and state terrorism in the past remind us of the devastating consequences the new war will entail for all people who are going to be caught up in it. A western war in Syria will only be putting a match to the tinterbox, engulfing the whole region and the wider Islamic world and beyond into a quagmire of unimaginable proportions.

In the last decade of the Divine Manifestation, Allah (twa) has informed His Khalifa (the Khalifatullah) Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius several times about the internal and external threats the Muslim Ummah will face and taught him special prayers for the believers to recite in these troubled times. In a Speech on September 09, 2013 the Khalifatullah (atba) spoke on the escalating Syrian situation and the ominous signs of a World War staring at mankind, in the backdrop of the prophecies of the Promised Massih Hadhrat Ahmad (as).

‘ISMUHU AHMAD’: ‘Munir is Ahmad’

Beyond all thoughts and imagination
Is the status of Ahmad (sa);
Whose servant, you can see,
Is the Messiah of the age!

-[Haqiqat-ul-Wahi, RK, Vol. 22, pp.286, f.n.)

Divine prophecies contain within them the seed of profound fulfillment: sometimes once, often several times. In the fullness of time, when it unravel and unveil before the world, it is for the believers to recognize and accept the enduring spirit of Divine Truth reverberating through time and history as magnificent reflections of the original fulfillment. Consider the great prophecy of Jesus (as) regarding the raising of the Holy Prophet of Islam, Hadhrat Muhammad (sa). Centuries after it was originally made and recorded in the Holy Books of the Christians (Gospel of John, 14: 16-17; 15:26; 16:7, 12-14),  the Holy Qur’an confirmed the prophecy: ‘Jesus, son of Mary, said, Children of Israel, I am sent to you by God, confirming the Torah that came before me and bringing good news of a messenger to follow me whose name will be Ahmad’   (61:07).

In a special Sermon delivered on September 07, 2013 the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim (atba) of Mauritius explains the ways in which Allah (twa) has imprinted and illuminated his name in the Kitab Al Munir/Qur’an Al Azim through the prophecy on ‘ISMUHU AHMAD’.

Read the Extracts from the Speech:

Allah reveals in the Holy Quran about the glad tidings vouchsafed by Jesus to his people concerning the advent of “Ahmad”.
“And giving glad tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad” (61: 7).

Without any doubt, the reference to “Ahmad” as mentioned by Jesus and confirmed by Allah in the Holy Quran calls our attention to the advent of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw). But like the extent of the verses of the Holy Quran are infinite and its interpretations likewise, Allah made this humble self also understand that this applies also to the advent of the first Messiah of Islam and also to this humble self.

‘Jesus is in the Third Heaven’

Religious beliefs sometimes have a tendency to challenge common sense. Thus, the Christians hold the belief that the founder of their religion, i.e., Jesus, Son of Mary is the literal ‘Son of God’. Likewise, defying gravity, logic of reason and experience of history, sections of the Muslims continue to hold the belief that the Prophet Jesus (as) is still ‘alive’, two millennium after his birth and they say that he would physically descend in our times among the Muslims as their Imam!

No doubt, in the Muslim spiritual tradition, Jesus (as) is one of the great messengers of the Almighty, celebrated along with Hadhrat Muhammad (sa). However, the ‘belief’ on or the myth of, a physically alive Jesus crept into Islam/among the Muslims in the medieval period when the influx of Christians into Islam led to a mixing of ‘cultures’ and the dogmas of the Christians found their way into, replacing the traditional Muslim understanding on the matter, shaped by the Qur’an and taught by the Holy Prophet of Islam (sa). In a special Sermon delivered on September 07, 2013 the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius throws searching light on the physical death of Jesus (as), as emerging from the express Qur’anic verses and the opinions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) on the matter.

Read the Extracts from the Sermon:

Allah says in the Holy Qur'an:

Fa lammaa tawaffay tanii kunta ‘Antar-Raqiiba ‘alayhim: wa ‘Anta ‘alaa kulli shay-‘in Shahiid.

But when You cause me to die, You were the Guardian over them, and You are, over all things, Witness. (Al-Maida 5: 118)

Death and life are not alike. If God has given us life, He also decreed death for us, humans, and all living creatures that He has placed in the universe. And verily, in death, there is life and in life, there is death.

A 'Khalifatullah' among Ahmadis

In his Friday Sermon of 06 September 2013, Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim (aba) of Mauritius provides an illuminating commentary on the continuity of Divine guidance in Islam in the Later Days.

The great prophecies regarding the Second Manifestation of the Holy Prophet of Islam (sa) appearing among the “Aakhariin” have been fulfilled at one level with the appearance of the Promised Massih/Khalifatullah Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) of Qadian in the last century. Till the appearance of a Divine Elect as a Khalifatullah who shall speak with the help of the Rooh-ul-Qudus, Ahmadis have been advised by the Promised Massih (as) (in Al Wassiyat) to remain united under an elected leadership and accordingly, the Khilafat-e- Ahmadiyya was established. Now that in the new century of Islam, Allah (twa) has raised His own Khalifa in the person of Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim (aba) of Mauritius, there is no scope for a man-elected Khalifa to play a spiritual role. Instead of propagating 'Khatame Massih Maoud' to continue with the mundane Khilafat system within and thereby  commanding Allah to do as per their liking, the scholars and members of the Jamaat-e- Ahmadiyya would do well to introspect, show spiritual humility and follow the new Divine Messenger.

Read the extracts from the Friday Sermon:

“And He will raise him from among others of them who have not yet joined the first (ones). He is the Mighty, the Wise.” (62: 4)

To add to what has been mentioned in this verse of the Holy Quran on the appearance of a Khalifatullah, the Messiah of the last days, and the one who shall in fact symbolize the Spiritual Second Manifestation of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) among the “Aakhariin” this verse of the Holy Quran is indeed very revealing: He regulates the affair from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count.” (32: 6)

According to this verse, Islam shall go through a dark period that would last a thousand years, after a first period of progress and prosperity. This first glory would last three hundred years, according to the traditions. Indeed the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “My century is best. Then it will be the century of those who come after my companions (the Tabi’in) then it will be one of those who will come after Tabeïnes (the Tabi-Tabi’in).”

The Case against War on Syria

The US President, Barak H. Obama, is currently seeking domestic Congressional endorsement and international political support to legitimate his decision to invade Syria. The US war against Syria has the strategic support of Israel, which shares the goal of containing Iran and the Hizb-Allah of Lebanon, which are viewed as the last threat to Israel’s national security interests in the wider Middle East. As Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and now Syria come under external attacks one after the other, the unfolding humanitarian disaster it represents for the common Muslim peoples is a matter of grave concern. The recent reports about the usage of chemical weapons in the on-going Syrian civil war provide the perfect pretext for the planned invasion. The unilateral intervention, without sufficient approval from the broader international community and the UN Security Council in particular, will be a naked violation of the rules and principles of international law. In the name of protecting the people, the US military intervention will only repeat the tragic history of destruction of the very edifice of yet another Muslim society.

Ambassador Kanwal Sibal, India’s former Foreign Secretary and a distinguished scholar of international affairs, in his article “Two-faced in West Asia”, published in The Hindu (New Delhi), September 4, 2013, comments upon the US case for intervening in Syria aslegally weak, internationally divisive and morally hollow”. For the benefit of our readers, we reproduce the article below:

A Message to All Seekers of Truth

Whenever a Divine Messenger is raised in the world, it represents a spiritual test for all believers. To re-examine the validity of one’s father’s traditions and other inherited notions of belief systems requires a full commitment to be aware of the larger truth of the Divine reality. A matching humility of the heart to accept and follow the narrow and straight path of the Divine as one finds it is also necessary. Likewise, a courageous spirit to face the world with one’s innate conscience and the confidence of one’s convictions rooted in the sublime feeling of being mindful of Allah (twa) in all of one’s deeds constitute the identity of the new believer. Thus, to accept a Divine Reformer in a new era often means to put Allah (twa) and His judgement over all our ‘comfort zones’ of family and friends, relatives and brothers in faith. To be on the vanguard of creating a new world by following the Divine servant requires one to believe that Divine guidance is true guidance.

Muslims, including the Ahmadis, today face this challenge of spirituality as Allah (twa) has raised His Messenger in the personhood of the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius in the new century of Islam. It is for them to shun the arrogance of intellectualism and the hubris of special claims of Divine privileges and to adjust their spiritual doctrines and theological understandings to match step with the times of a Divine Messenger. In August 2013, some members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Kerala followed their innermost spiritual convictions and accepted the new Mujaddid of the era, leaving aside their previous association with the man-elected Khilafat system in the Jamaat-e- Ahmadiyya.

In a special Message issued on the occasion of the new Bai’ats on Saturday, August 10, 2013 the Khalifatullah (atba) reflects upon the empirical conditions in the Jamaat-e- Ahmadiyya that has necessitated the raising of a Divine Reformer as per Sunnat Allah (Divine practice) and also on the trials and rewards that await those who follow true Divine Guidance.

‘Maurice Under Threat of An Epidemic’

"He is the Knower of the unseen, and He does not grant anyone ascendancy over His domain of the unseen. Except him whom He chooses as His Messenger."
- The Holy Qur'an, 72: 27-28.

The Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius has received a spécial Divine Message in the French language (on  Friday August 30, 2013 at 9.05 pm) containing intimations about the out-break of an epidemic in Maurice. [Inset: “The First War of the Balkans: Cholera Epidemic”-this colour engraving is from the cover of Le Petit Journal, published in Paris, December 1912. The graphic image of Death with his scythe communicates the news that a cholera epidemic has begun. The artist, who is unknown, depicts the flying figure of Death cutting down a river of humanity in a single stroke).

The Divine révélation has come at a period of time when two airport employees died in the aftermath of leptospirosis, an infectious disease transmitted by rodents.

What is leptospirosis?

It is a bacterial infection caused by leptospirosis. In most parts of the world, small mammals (rats, mice etc.) are presumed to be its wild reservoir. Their urine is almost always the direct or indirect source of human infections.

In case of late diagnosis it causes kidney failure, which can result in death.

Symptoms of leptospirosis: Its symptoms can be confused with flu or gastroenteritis as it is manifested by high fever, vomiting, severe headache, muscle aches, diarrhoea. And, to an advanced stage causing renal and hepatic problems.

For the Official Statement, click here:

It is instructive to note that only recently, on August 15, 2013, the Khalifatullah (atba) spoke about the EVENTFUL year that 2013 has turned out to be in many, different ways: coups d’état, wars, political strategic plans against Muslim countries and consequently the continuous war between Muslim brothers. We can paint a whole picture of massacres in our today’s society. What is very important is that the humble servant of Allah has already warned the world about these events years ago and even at the end of 2012. Hadhrat Khalifatullah (atba) has told very clearly that Mauritius and the neighbouring islands also will not be spared.

Accusations against the Muhyi-ud-Din

The Khilafat system in the Jamaat-e- Ahmadiyya was initially and originally thought of as an interim, mundane institutional arrangement to carry on with the work of propagating the Sahih-al-Islam till the arrival of Divinely-raised Khalifa (Khalifatullah). Yet, in course of time, its self-declared custodians trampled to dust the original teachings of the Promised Massih (as) and arbitrarily elevated the man-made system and unjustly dismissed a Divine prerogative (of raising His Khalifa in a new century) into oblivion. Yet, Allah (twa) does what He will- He raised His own Khalifa in the new century of Islam, regardless of the mundane preoccupations of a temporal system. Slowly, but surely the tide is turning, with the Ahmadis in India and elsewhere themselves being able to recognize the truth of the Divine Project at work and accepting the Divine Messenger, creating panic and anxiety in the rank and file of Nizam-e-Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya .

In the aftermath of recent instances of members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in India taking Bai’ats at the hands of the Muhyi-ud-Din, the mercenaries of the Jamaat-e- Ahmadiyya (Mullahs, Maulvis and leaders) are hell-bent on ruining their spiritual lives: in their misguided bullishness, they seek to deviate unsuspecting common folks from following the path of the Messenger of Allah of our times by assassinating his character (God forbid). They spread the lie that the Muhyi-ud-Din is a “Bimaari” (“mentally sick person”). Other imbeciles are spreading canards, casting aspersions on the sexual morality of a Divine Messenger. In his Friday Sermon of August 30, 2013 the Khalifatullah, Muhyi-ud-Din Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius spent some time responding to the wild accusations being given currency to, by a number of adversaries of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam in recent times.

'A Call to the TRUTH'

Mukarram Jamal-ud-Din Sahib, the respected Amir Sahib of the Jamaat-Ul-Sahih Al Islam- Kerala (INDIA) has issued a Public Notice to the attention of all those who seek spiritual solace and Divine pleasure in these troubled times. This is an open invitation to join and assemble under the banner of the Divinely-raised Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius and the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam International. The original notice in Malayalam can be read HERE.

For the benefit of our readers, an English Translation of the Notice is below:

The Holy Qur’an states:

God took a pledge from the prophets, saying,

If, after I have bestowed Scripture and wisdom upon you, a messenger comes confirming what you have been given, you must believe in him and support him. Do you affirm this and accept My pledge as binding on you?

They said, ‘We do.’  He said, ‘Then bear witness and I too will bear witness.’

Egypt: Democracy in Peril

In an official statement issued on August 15, 2013 the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius expresses deep concern at the on-going military strife in Egypt which has imperilled a democratically elected government and has unleashed bloodshed on the streets and calls upon the international community to stand up for “justice and peace, not injustice and chaos” in these troubled times.

Read the Official Statement below:

As the Khalifatullah of this era and the head of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam International, I condemn any coup d’état in Egypt – following the clashes between the military and supporters of the ousted President Mohamed Morsi – which have already caused over 2200 deaths and over 10,000 wounded. I strongly condemn the violence in Egypt. As a spiritual leader I believe in democratic values and condemn any such type of revolution. Indeed Mr. Mohamed Morsi was democratically elected.

The Islamic Veil: Ethics and Prudence

Continuing the series of sermons on women’s struggle for dignity, identity and equality in society and the larger Islamic teachings that provide a framework to address these complex questions, in his Friday Sermon of 23 August 2013, the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius provides illuminating guidance on the ethics and prudence of the Islamic veil as a moral choice for women (and men).

Read the Extracts from the Friday Sermon:

O children of Adam! We have indeed bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment.” (7: 27).

“O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves (part) of their outer garments. This is the best way for them to be recognized and not be abused. And Allah is really Most-Forgiving and Most-Merciful.” (33: 60)

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze, and protect their private parts and not to show off their adornment...” (24: 32)

The ISLAMIC VEIL has always been the subject of debate in several countries which is said to be modern with liberal thoughts. The West and countries adopting European cultures around the world see the Muslim woman as a prisoner and without having any dignity, just by the way they dress, the way they cover themselves from head to toe.

Muslims of Burma: Facing Buddhist Terror

In a number of Buddhist- majority states in Asia- Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, etc. -the Muslim minorities are under siege. Both the State agencies and the Buddhist chauvinists are driving the anti-Muslim hate campaigns and consequent violence against the hapless minorities. The unspeakable horrors committed by the Buddhist marauders against the Rohingya Muslims of Burma have caught international attention in the recent months.

In the latest issue of the international newsweekly Time Magazine of the United States, one may read a graphic portrait of Buddhist Terrorism in Burma and Thailand, where a Muslim-majority province in the deep south of the country is under siege of the Buddhist army of Thailand. Sri Lanka on Tuesday (July 02, 2013) banned the sale of this issue of Time magazine because of the newsweekly’s feature article on Buddhist terrorism. We publish below the Full text of the cover story “The Face of Buddhist Terror” in July 01, 2013 TIME magazine.

The Face of Buddhist Terror
It’s a faith famous for its pacifism and tolerance. But in several of Asia’s Buddhist-majority nations, monks are inciting bigotry and violence — mostly against Muslims
By Hannah Beech / Meikhtila, Burma, And Pattani, Thailand

His face as still and serene as a statue’s, the Buddhist monk who has taken the title “the Burmese bin Laden” begins his sermon. Hundreds of worshippers sit before him, palms pressed together, sweat trickling down their sticky backs. On cue, the crowd chants with the man in burgundy robes, the mantras drifting through the sultry air of a temple in Mandalay, Burma’s second biggest city after Rangoon. It seems a peaceful scene, but Wirathu’s message crackles with hate. “Now is not the time for calm,” the monk intones, as he spends 90 minutes describing the many ways in which he detests the minority Muslims in this Buddhist-majority land. “Now is the time to rise up, to make your blood boil.”

‘HIJRAH’ as Islamic Ethics

Islam values freedom of expression and association, of belief and faith, of worship and practice as a primary condition of community life in a decent society. It also recognizes that ruling oligarchies and power elites may reject these fundamental freedoms of people and even persecute people on the grounds of their deeply-held spiritual convictions.  Indeed, Islam emerged in a society where polytheists and image-worshippers were persecuting people on the grounds of their beliefs. With relentless persecution in society, the early Muslims in Makkah had no option but to migrate to Medina along with the Holy Prophet of Islam Hadhrat Muhammad (sa). In Islamic tradition, this incident is of historic importance as the Hijrah.

According to the Holy Qur’an, migration (Hijrah) is an option for all those who suffer religious intolerance, or other forms of oppression and persecution. To escape from persecution, Divine Messengers and their followers in the past had undertaken migration from their land and sought freedom in exile. I will emigrate for the sake of my Lord’, (29:26; 37:99) declared Hadhrat Ibrahim (as) when threatened by his own people. Hadhrat Musa (as) and the Israelites had to flee the oppression of the Pharaoh: ‘So he escaped from there, vigilant and fearing for his life, and said My Lord, deliver me from these oppressors’ (28:21).

In his Friday Sermon of 21 June 2013, the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius provides illuminating insights on the larger spiritual essence of the idea of Hijrah in the everyday lives of the believers and Divine seekers. Beyond the actual physical migration from an oppressive place, Hijrah entails a commitment to consciously leave aside all illicit acts/dealings arising out of Hubb-ud-Duniya or love of this temporal world and to perform and embrace all religious/ethical obligations and Divine commandments, keeping in mind the journey to the Hereafter (Aakhirat), under the guidance of a Spiritual Master that Islam provides in every age.

Read the Extracts from the Friday Sermon:

‘Control Your Tongue’

One of the most dangerous of human vices is lying. Much damage may be inflicted in human relations through the spread of lies and falsehoods. Prudence demands that we be cautious and careful in how we deploy our tongue so as to avoid injury and damage to others. In his Friday Sermon of June 28, 2013 the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius gave a profound discourse on the wisdom of silence by drawing upon the sacred traditions of the Holy Prophet of Islam (sa).

And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah a lie or denies His verses? Indeed, the wrongdoers will not succeed. (6: 22)

Persecution of Ahmadis in Indonesia

The on-going campaign in Indonesia, to ban and persecute the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community underscores the challenges facing the nation in protecting human rights, forging a secular identity and strengthening the spirit of democracy and rule of law. It is worth recalling that freedom of belief is a fundamental human right, guaranteed by the Indonesian Constitution, and no citizen can be denied this right on the grounds of his or her beliefs. Any thinking citizen would agree that as a religious order, the Ahmadiyya has every right to preach and propagate all of its doctrines and beliefs. It is immaterial for a secular state whether the beliefs or ritual practices may or may not conform to the beliefs and practices of the other denominations in Islam.

The religio-political campaign obviously seeks to discredit the teachings of the Ahmadiyya community and to call attention to the "danger" faced from this intrinsically peaceful sect of Islam. Instead of displaying sectarian intolerance and moral bankruptcy, the orthodox leadership would do well to engage the Ahmadiyya Muslims in a theological, civilized, intellectual debate and thereby show a modicum of respect for the faith, intellect and convictions of ordinary Muslim citizens and others.

The sectarian politics of religious mobilization and its current manifestations will have divisive implications for the country's plural future. Clearly, banning the movement to prevent its spiritual appeal or declaring it a non-Muslim minority to stop its growth is not the business of a secular government. Leaders of the country and conscientious citizens would do well to reflect over the politically disastrous and socially divisive legacy of Pakistan's experiment with the criminalization of the Ahmadiyya sect. Social scientists and political analysts have, in recent times, traced the growth of Muslim extremism and cultural intolerance in Pakistan and elsewhere, to the divisive politics of anti-Ahmadiyya rhetoric.

At one level, what is at stake is the very notion of human rights and rule of law in a secular democracy. Extremists and right-wing Muslim orthodoxy should not be allowed to dictate the future of Indonesian identity. At another level, perhaps even more importantly, what is at stake for devout Muslims is the very meaning of being a Muslim in our times. After all, the Holy Qur’an explicitly states: "Let there be no compulsion in matters of faith." Islam's plural character and legacy of religious tolerance needs to be defended, ironically enough, against an "orthodoxy" that claims to represent it!

In an article published on The Hindu, one of India’s leading newspapers, on June 15, 2013, Pallavi Iyer has thrown searching light on the persecution of Ahmadis and other minority religious denominations and the growing signs of cultural intolerance in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country.

Muslims of Mauritius: Challenges Ahead

Mauritius is an island-state situated in the Indian Ocean with a population of over a million,  belonging to numerous ethnic/religious/linguistic groups, including the Hindus, Christians and Muslims. After centuries of colonial mercantile interests that caused and brought about waves of immigration from South Asia and elsewhere, the country today has the Hindus as the largest ethno-linguistic and religious group while the Muslims (at around 2,00,000) constitute a minority with around 17 per cent of the national population. With the attainment of independence from Britain in 1968, the country adopted a secular and democratic Constitutional framework and all social groups, thus, enjoy full freedom of worship and performance of religious rites and rituals. As the dominant community, the Hindus, however, continue to occupy important political and administrative positions and enjoys certain other privileges. On the contrary, the minority Muslim community remains to be on the social periphery with many grievances yet to be addressed.

In his Friday Sermon of June 07, 2013 the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius has called attention to the several problems and legitimate grievances of the Muslims of Mauritius, including on the twisted Hajj policy of the Mauritius Government. The spiritual pilgrimage to Makkah (in Saudi Arabia) for the performance of Hajj is one of the fundamental religious obligations of Muslims, wherever they are. In our times, thanks to improvement in transportation linkages and communication facilities, millions of Muslims engage in the preparation (of a life time) to make that august journey to Makkah. The Saudi Arabian Government has thus been constrained to delimit the number of believers assembling at the Holy City at this most important period of time due to logistical and accommodation/space- related concerns. Thus, countries have been allotted Hajj-quota (limiting the number of persons who will get visa to perform the Hajj in a specific year) and the opportunities to receive the visa are limited.

In the case of Mauritius, it is observed that influence-peddlers and other vested interests exercise undue influence to bear on who gets the recommendation for Hajj visa under the national quota. The politician-ministers tilt the scales in favour of their own cronies and other elite sections, leading to the unjust deprival of the opportunity to perform the Hajj to common Muslims who may be saving all through their lives for the purpose. Thus, year after the year, the same set of people-who are highly connected and politically influential- manage to get the visa and go for the Hajj, though it is not mandatory to perform Hajj more than once. On the contrary, most poor Muslims who may save for many years to go and perform the Hajj may not be able to get even the visa. The political leadership in the country essentially seeks to manipulate and exploit the divisions within the minority Muslim community and has virtually ignored or put on cold storage the important concerns of the Muslim community, including the need for an embassy in Saudi Arabia, which would facilitate the negotiations for an increase in the Hajj quota as well as in seeking trading and other labour market opportunities.

Even at the risk of being labelled “communal”, one may have to warn that both secularism and democracy in Mauritius are under threat from racist vultures in its body politic, feels the Khalifatullah (atba). When the minority Muslim community’s religious rights- to go on pilgrimage to Makkah for Hajj- and their social, administrative and economic progress within the country are being thwarted surreptitiously, it points to the presence of communalism on the body politic, points out the Khalifatullah (atba). Further, the Sermon provides illuminating guidance to the Muslims to come out of their predicament by paying attention to their community identity and the responsibilities of solidarity being conveyed through the Divine Messages available in their midst.

Mubahila Statement on Nasir Ahmad Sultani

In the Friday Sermon of May 31, 2013, the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius invited Dr. Nasir Ahmad Sultani Sahib of Jamaat-e- Ahmadiyya (Haqiqi) to a Mubahila duel to finally determine the truthfulness of their respective claims. In the aftermath of the Speech, the Sultani Sahib issued his response on June 1, 2013. In the response statement, the Sultani Sahib maintains and continues with his earlier stand of rejecting and vilifying the viewpoint of Hadhrat Khalifatullah (atba) and his claims. Yet, the Sultani Sahib has refused to come in the field of Mubahila now, by raising a revolving door-set of arguments.

Sultani Sahib is absolutely certain that the duration of the Mubahila, according to Islamic teachings, should be fixed 1 (one) year”.  According to him, if the period of Mubahila is varied from one year- for instance: say, any period more than one year, including two years- by the parties to the Mubahila for any reasons whatsoever, it would not be permissible under Islamic law nor acceptable to Sultani Sahib. Further, Sultani Sahib considers such a variation of period a wrong condition of Mubahila. Although Sultani Sahib did send an official e-mail on 12 December 2011 whereby he “accepted the Challenge” of Mubahila made by Hadhrat Khalifatullah (atba), he did not complete the minimum requirements for the world to know that he is indeed in a Mubahila (such as signing the Mubahila document and notifying the world by publishing it in his website). At least, now we know: the ‘reason’ for not joining in the Mubahila challenge at that point of time was this “wrong condition”!

Sultani Sahib now refuses to join the Mubahila Challenge with Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba). This is because of the presence of the 2-year Mubahila between Hadhrat Sahib (atba) and Abdul Ghaffar Janbah Sahib of Germany.  According to Sultani Sahib, the Islamic period of the Mubahila-“one year”- is over and both have been proved to be “liars”! If the ‘result’ of the (non-Islamic) Mubahila between the two is crystal clear to the “Mujaddid of 15th Century of Islam”, why should he wait for a longer period to prove his own truthfulness!??

In a special Booklet issued on June 2, 2013 the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) has prepared and personally signed an Official Mubahila Document with “ONE YEAR” as the limitation period. Dr. Nasir Ahmad Sultani Sahib has now the option to “come forward and sign” or move away and “keep quiet” on the matter!

Mubahila Challenge to Nasir Ahmad Sultani

As the Mubahila between the Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius and Abdul Ghaffar Janbah Sahib of Germany (and the respective Jamaats) enter into its second year, believers are patiently awaiting the Great Divine Decree to reveal and unravel itself in the cause of truth and His Truthful Messenger. Yet, there are others (outside the two Jamaats) who are keen to know the outcome of the Mubahila and are turning impatient. The Ameer of Jama'at e Ahmadiyyah (Haqiqi)” NASIR AHMAD SULTANI SAHIB, who is also a claimant ofMujaddid 15th century of Islamic Calendar” recently declared that since all the parties are still alive even after a year of Mubahila, it only means/proves that they are all liars. Thus, Sultani Sahib declares himself the winner in a contest he was not even party to!

In the aftermath of these developments, the Messenger of Allah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius has decided to respond. In his Friday Sermon of May 31, 2013 the Khalifatullah clarifies that it is permissible for parties to a Mubahila to agree upon the time period of Mubahila. Drawing upon the experiences/practices of the Promised Massih Hadhrat Ahmad (as), the Khalifatullah (atba) points to the instances in which there were Mubahilas with greater time periods. Finally, in a language that can penetrate and crack the hardest of rocks, the Lion of Allah challenges Sultani Sahib to show some spine and come to the court of Allah in the cause of truth by entering into a Mubahila.

Recently, I have received some correspondences which relate to Mubahila and especially concerning the Mubahila which I invited Abdul Ghaffar Janbah Sahib and his Jamaat (and specifically also one of his disciples Mansoor Ahmad Sahib) to accept. The thing is, instead of waiting for the specified two years limit mentioned in the Mubahila, some people like Mushtaq Malik Sahib and another claimant of divine vicegerency, Nasir Ahmad Sultani have made some comments to which I must respond.

‘A Pious Mother is Priceless’

Commodification of culture has become a rampant phenomenon in our times. It has pervaded almost all of our social institutions including family and religions.  Commercial interests are thus, increasingly driving and shaping the people’s latent cultural consciousness and traditional values and practices by promoting “combo-packages” and “special offers” on ‘festival’ occasions. Thus, it has become a ‘trend’ of our times- to commemorate/ celebrate a particular day in the year for various otherwise worthy causes and events. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Children’s Day, Family Day, etc. are illustrative examples.  In his Friday Sermon of May 24, 2013 Khalifatullah Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim Sahib (atba) of Mauritius took note of these contemporary trends in the context of the recent celebration of Mother’s Day in Mauritius and elsewhere. While rejecting such commercially-induced and market (and debt) - driven practices which trivialises our sense of who we are, the Khalifatullah (atba) underscores the importance of parents and especially the mother in the social engineering and nation-building process.

In an age in which the rights of the elderly parents are being disrespected by their own children and the old people are increasingly staring at a bleak and un-cared future, nation after nation is forced to bring in legislations and other protective, welfare measures to ensure the human and fundamental rights of the elderly. Islam offers an august space and status to the mother and exhorts Muslim children to be grateful for their parents’ selfless sacrifices and redeem the debt they owe when they grow up and their parents need them the most. Islamic teachings and normative expectations are a signpost for Muslims in fulfilling their spiritual and moral responsibilities, points out the Khalifatullah.
