Becoming ‘Maryam’, Bearing ‘Isa’

Our body is like Mary.

Each of us has a Jesus inside.

If a pain and yearning shows up inside us,

the Jesus of our soul is born.

If there is no pain, no yearning,

the Jesus of our soul will return to its origin from

the same secret passageway he came from…

If there is no pain, no yearning,

we will remain deprived

not benefiting from that Jesus of the soul.

-Hazrat Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi (ra) in Mathnawi---Translated by Omid Safi, in Radical Love: Teachings from the Islamic Mystical Tradition (Yale, 2018).

A true believer becomes like ‘Maryam’ and is infused with the Holy Spirit

In Surah Al Tahrim, we read: “And Allah next compares the believers to Maryam, the daughter of Imran, she took care to guard her chastity, so we breathed into him (the believer who is exemplified here) Our inspiration while she declared her faith in the revelations of her Lord and His scriptures and she became of the devoted ones to prayers and obedient to Him”- (Surah Al TahrimHQ, 66: 13)

In this Qur’anic verse, Maryam is set as an example for righteous servants of Allah. Like Maryam, true believers- though they are not Prophets of Allah- can also be bestowed with Divine revelations. Such a servant is like Maryam and then Allah will infuse His Ruh in him and he will become the like of Jesus, a servant of God and recipient of His Revelations. According to Hazrat Khalifatul Massih Awwal Allama Hakkim Nuruddin (ra), “the verse clearly informs us that in the Ummah of the Holy Prophet (pbuh), there will be people- both men and women- like Maryam, who will guard their chastity, be devoted to prayers, declare faith in the Scripture and because of being an obedient servant of Allah will receive the blessings of Divine Revelations. This promise has been given in the very first chapter of al-Fatihah in the words, “Show us the path of those whom you bestowed your Mercy”.

The Enduring Legacy of Prophet Muhammad

The Seal of Prophethood

In a Hadith recorded by Imam Bukhari and narrated by Hazrat Abu Huraira (ra), our Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) said, “My similitude in comparison with the other prophets before me, is that of a man who has built a house nicely and beautifully, except for a place of one brick in a corner. The people go about it and wonder at its beauty, but say: ‘Would that this brick be put in its place!’ So I am that brick, and I am the Seal of the Prophets.”

There is no doubt that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the last brick, perfecting the house of Deen (religion). He was indeed the one who perfected the construction by his advent (coming), for it is through Him that Allah has given us our religion, the final religion and perfected it for us by naming it ISLAM.

The Mission of Prophets and Divine Elects

This brings us to the meaning of a prophet. By way of meaning, a prophet is someone who receives news from the Unseen, i.e. from Allah through the Ruh’il Quddus. He does not see the future, but is informed about important things which shall happen in the future by the will of Allah. He cannot predict any future event without getting revelations from Allah informing him about it beforehand. Therefore, a prophet is one to make prophecies by Allah’s permission and he receives revelations from Allah. ‘Naba’ means news, true news of great importance. In the Arabic terminology, it is not used for any other normal news, like newspapers and media etc. It is used exclusively for such news which is of great importance, especially in the realm (field) of spirituality. And thus, Nabi’ (i.e. prophet) means such a person who is truth-speaking who receives truthful news of great value from Allah (swt) and who conveys it to the people. Therefore, a prophet can bring with the command of Allah, law-bearing news and non-law-bearing ones. It is an appellation to qualify such person who receives from Allah revelations amidst the common people of his era, and who can attain to the proximity of Allah for the salvation of the Deen (religion).

Reply to Abdul Ghany Jahangeer Khan

Earlier this month, the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam International published a new Book written by the Khalifatullah, Hadhrat Imam Muhyi-ud-Din Munir Ahmad Azim  Saheb (atba) of Mauritius. This tract is entitled, Towards the Understanding of Prophethood & the Fallacy of the Hypocrites. It can be read here

This book is an important contribution to the growing literature of the Jamaat, explaining the unthinking premises of the currently held notions of basic Ahmadi 'beliefs' on the 'continuity' of Khilafat in the Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya through mundane elections till the end of times.

Most Ahmadis today follow a narrow assumption of prophethood and spiritual leadership in the Muslim Ummah among the 'Aakharreen'. Devout Ahmadis are often misguided by their leaders and scholars into muddled thinking: that Allah (swt) can raise no one in this era with Divine revelations, to revitalize the constitutional architecture and thereby correct the administrative edifice of the legacy left behind by the Promised Massih (as) in the previous century. The fallacies apparent (and not so apparent) in the doctrinal assumptions of the current Ahmadi scholars on the concepts of 'Khilafat' and 'Rooh-il-Quddus' can be cleared only by a Man of God, a recipient of Divine Revelations in the tradition of the Promised Massih Hadhrat Ahmad (as) of Qadian. The reality of  the ways of the Divine and His Plans for spiritual rejuvenation unravel only in the fullness of time and scholarly assumptions are mere speculations unless blessed by the support and endorsement of Divine practice (Sunnatullah.), Alhamdulillah, for those who humble their selves and pay homage to the wisdom of God, the aforesaid Book offers subtle Signs of Divine wisdom, convincing argumentation on theological differences and clear reasoning on all incidents that it surveys.

Reproduced below is an extract of a section from the Book, containing a response to Mr. Abdul Ghany Jehangeerkhan, a maulvi in the Nizam-e-Jamaat and a self-declared, fierce opponent of the Divine Mission of the Khalifatullah. The scrutiny of the record of (mis-)deeds of this Maulvi provides a fascinating glimpse into the early Days of the Divine Manifestation when it faced enormous trials at the hands of the enemies of Allah (swt).

Read the Extracts below:

"By the grace of Almighty Allah, Allah has enabled us to be born Muslims and also belonging to the spiritual family and identity of the Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) who came more than 125 years ago with a rise of a new century to bring people from darkness into light.

It is Sunnat Allah (the blessed practice of our Lord Almighty, Allah) that whenever the original divine message is in danger of extinction, that is, when people have deviated from the right path and has taken their own souls as prisoners and cast them in the dungeon of unfaith, then Allah, merciful as ever, before seizing them with His mighty punishment, chooses to send to them, time after time, era after era someone from Him to bring back the pristine message of Islam, the pristine divine message.

It is a reality which existed since the dawn of time and which the Quran highlights that those in power try to manipulate the mass so that the people listen to what the corrupted divines have to say instead of the true Messengers of Allah who come to the world with the Ruh-il-Quddus (Holy Spirit) to warn mankind and to give good news of the approval and pleasure of Allah when those who come forward embrace the divine light which is offered to them.

If the teachings of Islam as a whole were being manipulated by the so-called divines and scholars so much so that Allah saw the need to send the Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as), then do you think that now the people in the Jamaat of the Promised Messiah (as) shall remain as devoted and pure as when the Ruh-il-Quddus was still descending on the Promised Messiah (as) when he was yet alive?

People constitute a Jamaat, and when people become corrupted especially the spiritual leaders and their subordinate chiefs (in all regions and countries), do you think that Allah shall stay aloof and won’t send His Chosen Messenger again to save the ship (the Community) of His true prophets? Such a Messenger who shall safeguard the honour of His elects and preserve His teachings as per His divine instructions which He sends in forms of revelations, true dreams and visions?

On the 09 July 2015, Mr Abdul Ghany Jahangeerkhan posted on alislam.org an article: “The characteristics of hypocrites”, thereby auto-proclaiming himself as the defender of the Khilafat-ul-Massih treating others as hypocrites without analysing his own deeds. We know the characteristics of an individual through his own actions.

Mr Abdul Ghany posed himself as a very nice little charming defendant of the Khalifa and Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya by citing some verses of the Holy Quran concerning the characteristics of the hypocrites.

'Eid' in the Times of a 'Khalifatullah'

THE TWO FESTIVALS OF MUSLIMS

We Muslims belonging to the spiritual family of Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) and Islam have two festivals, two days of celebrations which Allah (twt) has given us as moments of joy and as a token of His love and satisfaction to the sacrifices we happily do for His sake, as per the fulfilment of His divine commandments. These two moments of joys are the Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.

The Eid-ul-Fitr comes after the blessed month of Ramadan, the month of fasting for the sake of Allah with the intention to reap the harvest of Allah’s proximity and belonging to Him heart and soul. As for the Eid-ul-Adha, it is what is known as the greater Eid, the greater celebration as it concludes the Hajj rites and commemorates the great sacrifice of the Patriarch and Prophet of Allah, Ibrahim (as) and his devoted son Prophet Ismail (as).

By the grace of Allah, after a month of Ramadan, we are to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr, Insha-Allah, tomorrow. This Eid (Joy) is of the essence of Allah and reflects the devotion of the faster who sacrificed himself and his way of life for a whole (lunar) month just for the sake of Allah, as fasting during this blessed month has as reward Allah Himself.

THE SUNNAT ALLAH CONCERNING THE ADVENT OF DIVINE ELECTS

And by the grace of Almighty Allah, Allah has enabled us (Ahmadi Muslims) to be born Muslims and also belonging to the spiritual family and identity of the Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) who came more than 100 years ago with a rise of a new century to bring people from darkness into light.

'Ruh-il-Quddus' and 'Laila-tul-Qadr'

“The month of Ramadan (is that month) in which the Quran was revealed as guidance for mankind, clear proofs of right guidance, and criterion (for distinguishing right and wrong). So whoever of you witnesses this month, let him fast it.” (2: 186)

The Quran is the living miracle revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and is the perfect Word of Allah (twa). It explains to us where we come from and where we are going to, and leads us to the path of eternal bliss, that is, paradise, but it also warns us at the same time of hell and all paths which culminate to hell. It is a means of education, inspiration, physical, mental and spiritual healing, yet the sad reality is that as we continue to preserve the text, we have lost the meaning and injunctions, due to our poor understanding.

There is no means of deliverance in this Ummah, unless we return to the Book of Allah. Indeed the Quran may be guidance for humanity, but not all those who read it are guided, for such guidance has been preserved for selected individuals (the Muttaqeen, that is, the God-fearing and those who guard themselves against evil) who wish to sincerely tread upon this enlightened path of ultimate guidance. Not only does the meaning of the Quran inspire people from all over the world, the words alone bear a magnetic force and have the ability to move people, who may not know a word of Arabic.

The Quran, revealed in the mother tongue of the best of mankind, our beloved prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh), and mother of all tongues has stood the test of time for more than fourteen centuries and verily no other scripture can boast of such an achievement. Rivers change their courses, kingdoms rise and fall, languages become extinct along with its people and new ones are developed, but not the Quran. Of course this preservation is due to the divine promise made in the Quran itself, and verily Allah has enabled this miraculous preservation through the love, devotion and care that generations of Muslim showed towards the Quran but most importantly Allah accomplishes this task through raising from time to time His chosen people, the messengers and reformers of Islam to uphold the sanctity of the Quran and to expound it to others.

The Instrumental Role of Divine Revelations

Revelation may be a single word but its meaning is immense, just like a drop of water rippling a whole ocean. The nature of revelation is various, and among the types of revelations, we have satanic whisperings also which are not to be confused with the spiritual truthful context of revelations, that is, Divine Revelations. Any person can receive divine inspirations, yet divine revelations, as pure and frequent as that received by messengers of Allah are of an exquisite nature, which leaves no doubt as to the source of this special light. Therefore, revelation in Islam is tantamount to the extraordinary connection which links an exceptional servant of Allah to His Lord. ( Inset: a depiction of the archangel Gabriel instructing Divine revelations to the Holy Prophet (sa), from the manuscript Jami' al-tawarikh by Rashid-al-Din Hamadani, AD 1307).

This servant of Allah comes to taste of a special bond through which Allah reveals Himself to His servant, and little by little – just like a gardener who waters a newly planted seed into the soil to see it grow big, strong and productive – this servant of Allah through dreams, visions, divine inspirations and revelations grows from one spiritual state to the other and in capacity of exceptional blessed instrument of Allah, he gets to receive within him such light as to illuminate the whole world. His being becomes an object of light, a beacon of light as to attract those who are within the nexus of the pleasure of Allah to perceive his light, just like a radar emitting a powerful signal, to manifest his presence among the people of the earth, especially, those endowed with true knowledge. (Inset: Prophet Moses (as) with the tablets of the Ten Commandments, a painting by Rembrandt (1659).

Very often, these people who are qualified as “Ulul’al-Baab” (People of understanding, people endowed with true knowledge) are very humble in nature. They may be viewed as hopeless and poor people in the eyes of men, whereas in the eyes of the Almighty, their status is most high. This is because they do not sell their consciousness and pure heart and faith to the attractions of this world; they do not let themselves be attached to it. A person also can be rich and be among the true Ulul’al-Baab because despite the money and riches he earns, yet he is not greedy for it, and canalise this wealth in its proper channel, that is to say, he obeys the instructions and commandments of the Quran and he shares his wealth to the poor in the proportions made obligatory to him by Allah, and also those parts of his wealth that he gives in charity, with good faith as a voluntary action due to tenderness of his heart to help the less fortunate and also the community of believers in Dawah Mission (Inviting and Bringing people to Allah, to Islam).

Therefore, the Ulul’al-Baab, whether rich or poor, or in-between (neither too rich nor poor) captures the signal emitted by the special radar sent by Allah, so that within the circle of this exquisite connection one may be able to reach to Allah without any doubt. This Messenger of Allah, the Holder of Light, the guidance to the world comes to teach people how to get this connection with Allah. And this he is able to do with the help of the Ruh-il-Quddus (Holy Spirit).

Like I have always told my disciples in Mauritius ever since the beginning of the Divine Manifestation, connection with Allah comes with a purification of the heart, and it is in that state of purification – whereby there is no doubt as to the truthfulness of the Spiritual Guide (that is, this humble self) and the Divine Manifestation – and with belief, faith, and trust that the God who has sent His Messenger with the Holy Spirit has indeed the power of speech despite having no tongue to talk, that the person in question can reach to Allah. I am talking for the current Divine Manifestation of this age, because I have been sent in this era to you all to guide you to Allah, and thus, belief, faith and trust in the veracity of this humble self is essential if someone wants to get to the exquisite proximity of Allah taking this humble self as guide and mentor.
