Qur'an, Prayer and Healing

‘He who cures me when I am ill’ (26:81)

‘He will heal the believers’ feelings’. (9:14)

Several verses testify to the fact that the Quran is a mercy to those who are receptive to its message. It's teachings act as a cure for various ailments of the heart, including ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy, rancour, hatred, and enmity. For a true believer, the Book of God enables one to acquire virtue and perfection of character, adorning him/her with the gifts of knowledge and wisdom. Indeed, those who seek cure from the Qur’an, it is God Who will cure them:

‘People, a teaching from your Lord has come to you, a healing for what is in [your] hearts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.(10:58)

‘We send down the Quran as a healing and mercy for the believers’. (17:82)

‘Say, ‘It is guidance and healing for those who have faith’. (41:45)

And your Lord inspired the bee, saying, ‘Build yourselves houses in the mountains and trees and what people construct. Then feed on all kinds of fruit and follow the ways made easy for you by your Lord.’ From their bellies comes a drink of different colours, in which, there is healing for people. There truly is a sign in this for those who think.’ (16: 69-70)

It is also instructive to note that for those suffering from fever, physical ailment and various other pains and aches, the Holy Prophet (sa) used to offer a prayer:

Bismillahi Arqika, min kulli shay’in yu’dheek, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin haasid, Allaahu yashfeek, Bismillahi Arqeeka, Wallahu Yashfeeqa.

'With the name of Allah, I recite a prayer over you, to cure you from everything that is causing you suffering, from the evil of every person and evil eye. In the name of Allah I recite a prayer over you, may Allah cure you.'  [Narrated by Al Tirmidhi, al- Sunan, 3:303, 5972]

In this context, for the beneficial attention of everyone, we reproduce below an important spiritual guidance by the Living Mujaddid of this era, Imam- Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam Hazrat Muhyiuddin Al Khalifatullah Munir Ahmad Azim (aba) of Mauritius pertaining to sublime invocations for healing in times of sickness and diseases impacting health and well being.

‘Salat-ul-Shifa’ : Prayer for Healing

On Thursday 02 July 2020 after having worked a little on the Al-Azim Tafsir’ul Quran, I read the attributes of Allah and around 10.20 pm, these attributes came on my tongue: Ya Ahadu, Ya Samadu, Ya Witru, Ya Fardu.

In other words, Allah made me understand:

Ya Ahadu - O You the Unique One

Ya Samadu - O You the Incomparable

Ya Witru - O You the Odd One

Ya Fardu - O You the Distinct One

These attributes are read for those who are sick or for yourselves if you are sick. What Allah has made clear also is concerning the Salat-ul-Shifa, which is a supererogatory prayer for healing, and these duahs must also be said for healing [Shifa]:

Allahumma Yaa Shaafiyal Amraade. – O Allah! The One who gives Cure for all illnesses.

Bismillaho wal Kaafi. – In the name of Allah, The One who suffices.

Bismillaho wash-Shaafi. – In the name of Allah, The Curer.

Bismillahi Ishféni. – In the name of Allah, O Allah, Cure me !

I have to thank Allah (swt) very much for teaching me all of this. So, regarding Salat-ul-Shifa, it is a prayer that is made to protect oneself from illness. So read once the Surah Yasin and then perform 2-Rakaat (cycles) of supererogatory prayers with the intention of Salat-ul-Shifa. You can read any Surah and before the end of the prayer read these attributes as much as possible: Ya Ahadu, Ya Samadu, Ya Witru, Ya Fardu.

If you are doing this Ibadah to heal yourselves, you can read these attributes and the Duahs of Shifa aloud and then blow on your body. If you are doing it for someone else, read the Duahs of Shifa and the attributes of Allah in his place and then blow on him [in an odd number of times].

So, I urge my disciples and all my Muslim brothers, sisters and children and all humanity to recite Allah’s attributes in a humble way, slowly and with concentration and reflect on their meanings. I pray, may Allah rid you from all your difficulties and bestow you with His love and mercy in such a way that whatever He gives you suffices for you plentifully in your worldly as well as spiritual lives, in this life and the hereafter. Insha-Allah. Ameen.' [Extracts from Friday Sermon of 03 July 2020~11 Dhul-Qaddah 1441 AH ].
