Balancing 'Freedom'

The modern concept of human freedoms and individual rights emerged in the long, complex struggle for a new, social contract between the people and the State in actually-existing social conditions of slavery and serfdom in pre-modern Europe and elsewhere. Against the backdrop of the great struggles for independence from colonial subjugation and imperial practices of racial segregation and social discrimination, people looked upon Constitutionally-guaranteed and legally-defined freedoms as the bulwark against potential oppression and highhandedness of the ruling elites operating in the name of the State.  In Rule of Law theory, it is expected that the provision of separation of powers and the presence of an independent judiciary will facilitate the freedoms of individuals in society.  The proper functioning of the social wheel requires that everyone works within the functional work of personal responsibility and moderation of interests so as to respect the similar rights of others.

In his Friday Sermon of 25 June 2021~13 Dhul-Qaddah 1442 AH, Imam-Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam Hazrat Khalifatullah Munir A. Azim (aba)of Mauritius initiates a probing discussion on the abuse of 'freedom' in our times by those who reject any limitations and restrictions on their concept of freedom. As Hazrat Khalifatullah (aba) notes, such a context-free 'freedom' can have very negative implications: Hate speech, Islamophobia, racial and communal prejudice, bigotry and defamation; capitalist ownership of, and monopoly over Natural Resources, etc.

The Shariah, or the Islamic Way of Life, contains a framework of ideas for shaping norms based on a true conception of individual freedom blended with social responsibility. Avoiding or evading Divine regulations in the name of 'freedoms' may unsettle the delicate 'balance' the Shariah seeks to achieve among competing public interests in a pragmatic way. While libertarians and anarchists call for freedom and rights for the sake of rights without any restraints and regardless of context; in reality, many nations are passing laws that severely restrict even the freedoms that people have reason to value. Sometimes, the laws made in the Assemblies and Parliaments of the people in various States do not get the balance right as they often 'lean' on the State's need to keep regulatory control and authority firmly in place, and when these man-made laws fail to gain the balance right in their regulations and policies, it invariably impacts peoples' freedoms and the  society's true progress, warns Hazrat Khalifatullah (aba).

False Concept of Freedom

There is no slogan that has been voted and approved as much as that of freedom. The propagation of the concept of “freedom” is done through songs, movies, commercials and even by politicians.

“This is my life, and I do what I want with it!” - This is the typical phrase that has resonated in many movies to indoctrinate people’s minds with this concept. If you ask anyone about “freedom”, be it a socialist, a capitalist, a Christian, anyone from any religion or even an atheist, they will defend that concept [that is, the concept of freedom] vigorously. Even a lot of revolutions have been done in the name of “freedom”. For example, Lenin [who was a lawyer by profession and Russian revolutionary] promised “Freedom” to his people on the condition that they overthrow the Tsar [the Emperor of Russia] - whom they actually succeeded in overthrowing in 1917. Even the ANC [the African National Congress] used the concept of ‘freedom’ to advance the oppressive and racist regime that was in place in South Africa.

In truth, there are many who act as agents of the concept of ‘freedom’ without even realizing what it really means. How can a capitalist and a communist - both - advocate “freedom”, when we know very well that both are enemies of each other? It seems that everyone has their own definition of the concept of “freedom”. For a group, the definition of “freedom” means that an individual is accountable only to himself and that no one has the right to tell him what to do. While secular societies in the west say their foundations are based on freedom; for them, the concept of “freedom” means: freedom of property, freedom of belief or faith, freedom of expression, freedom of an individual.

According to this concept, people are free to own whatever they want. Therefore, water and gas can be privatized in the name of “freedom”. Yet anytime we buy something, we have to pay for it. But then who do the water companies pay when they collect rainwater especially when they sell it with us for huge profits?

The freedom of property – according to those thoughts – implies that a prostitute has the right to sell her body; it means that people own their lives and can do what they want with them. They can abuse on themselves [on their lives] with alcohol and drugs or they can kill themselves if they so desire. All this, in the name of “freedom”!

The ‘freedom of faith’ – again by what the world defines as ‘freedom’ - implies that anyone has the right to believe in what they want, and does not require any justification. It is permissible for anyone to believe in anything as a god. People are free to worship Satan or believe in supposed ‘saviours’ especially those who practice witchcraft where they take money from people and ask them to bring such and such things and also a life [either a hen or a black rooster – there are those who ask people to bring a goat (an animal)] – and the panic-stricken person looks for that amount of money and brings it to these so-called ‘saviours’. So these types of people place their faith, their trust in these bogus ‘saviours’ and the latter - all of those false saviours - eat their money with their bogus satanic system.

The other freedom is ‘free speech’ which means people are free to fabricate lies, false claims and slander against others. People are allowed to produce communal films to insult and hurt the feelings of millions of people around the world. Mass Media [Radios, Televisions, Newspapers, etc.] is allowed to call Muslims terrorists or accuse them of being responsible for the bombings without any justification, while provoking a general feeling of hatred in the country in regard to Muslims. The “freedom” of expression also means that people can talk about anything, and say any nonsense!!!

What’s wrong with this concept of “freedom”? Verily, the concept of “freedom” is unreal because everyone is attached to someone or something. As long as “freedom” leads to chaos [destruction] and the collapse of society, then there has been a need to establish certain bodies to protect people from… what? Against their own definition of “freedom”!

So on the one hand they say people are free but in reality there is no freedom. For example, a ‘Monopoly Commission’ exists in several countries around the world in order to circumvent ‘freedom’ of property. For example, governments pass laws like the “Criminal Justice Bill” to prohibit the use of drugs unbeknownst to a person’s “liberty.”

Even “freedom” of expression does not exist. How many prisoners of conscience and politics are rotting in prisons around the world? In many places, Muslims are prohibited from organizing debates on problematic topics such as “Israel” or even the concept of “freedom”.

So in reality the concept of ‘freedom’ is a fallacy because in one way or another there is someone or some organization that is deciding for you what you have the right to do or not. An individual is free as long as no one else intervenes in his freedom. And who among us has the right to define “freedom”? By the way, it is only an illusory slogan and a false deity that is linked with the West. It’s just a myth - a false story - that has been spread among people and continually drugs them and keeps them from thinking. It is an illusion that produces people who have no sense of responsibility. It prevents anyone from telling their neighbour what to do or not to do and each person only has their own responsibility. So, it’s no surprise to find a person betraying their neighbour, stealing their own partner, committing rape and crime. In fact, we all know that cases of violence have increased around the world. The ‘freedom’ [a so-called freedom] of one individual at this time equals the misery of another - where a criminal, a rapist, a thief believes he has every right to commit these crimes, and therefore, it is the victims who pay the price.

So the key to this problem is who are the ones who define what a person has the right to do and what not? In Mauritius, as everywhere else, it is a small group of people, human beings, who are limited, who are weak who make laws and define for the rest of the population what is legal and what is not. If people break these laws, then they will be punished. It is clear that people have become slaves to other human beings like themselves.

The whole world bears witness to the consequences of the laws of man. South Africans dream of ‘freedom’ has turned into a nightmare and today Johannesburg is recognized as the most dangerous capital in the whole world, more than New York, the so-called Capital of ‘freedom’.

So what alternative do we have? If we look around a bit, we will find that there is nothing that is truly free or isolated. Everything that exists in the universe has its reason for being and follows a certain law, whether it is the stars which are in the sky and which guide the sailors during the night, and whether it is even the leaves on the trees which help in the purification of the air, as well as the orbit the earth around the sun, the way the birds fly south during the winter and the way the rain revives the earth after it has become dry and barren [arid].

All creation follows a universal law which brings harmonious existence. Without the law, the universe would be in total chaos. The Creator of the universe and of mankind also provided a system for His creation to follow and by which everything must live, and this system is what we call AL-ISLAM. Our Creator has left us free so that we use our minds and our intelligence to conclude that it is only the One Who created us, as well as the earth and the universe with all that contains therein, Who has the exclusive right and the ability to define what is legal and illegal for us. Thus, Islam frees man from human slavery and directs him to obedience to Allah (swt).

We, the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam International therefore call on the Muslim Ummah and all of humanity to reject these false deities and idols of ‘freedom’. Turn to the SAHIH AL ISLAM which is the only system capable of liberating humanity from man-made laws. Insha-Allah, may the world know its Creator and adopt the true conception of freedom, a freedom which is not selfish, but where people make the right choice which will draw upon them the pleasure of their Creator and not His anger. Insha-Allah, Ameen.
