'The Khalifa of Islam': Of Titles and Tasks

10 Years of the official proclamation as "Khalifatullah"

In a special lecture delivered on 27 May 2018, coinciding with the 10th Anniversary of his Divinely-inspired proclamation of 26 May 2008 as the Caliph of God-"Khalifatullah"- the foremost Islamic spiritual personality of this era Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim (aba) of Mauritius- Holy Founder of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam- gives an illuminating discourse on the system of the advent of the Spiritual Heirs of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (sa) in every era of Islam, to rejuvenate the Faith and to be a practical exemplar of the Holy Tradition/ Islamic Practice in everyday life for the devout.

The Islamic sacred tradition recognizes the devout savants of the Faith by conferring upon them grand titles: "Khalifa", "Imam", "Mujaddid", "Muhyi-ud-Din", "Sheikh-ul-Islam", "Hujjatul Islam", "Mahdi", "Massih","Ummati-Nabi", etc. Drawing on the Holy Prophet's teachings, and also keeping in view the additional explanations of the Promised Massih (as) in the previous era, Hadhrat Saheb (atba) in his discourse, succinctly summarizes the spiritual doctrine on the purpose of the advent of the Elects of God in every era. Moreover, Hadhrat Saheb (atba) reminds both his enemies and friends of the need to be critically aware of the "mistakes of the past" when peoples and communities have preferred the adulation of the powers that be and ignored perennial Divine teachings and thereby they let go of a precious heritage of sublime faith represented by the advent of a Divine servant among them

Alhamdulillah, the message is of immediate relevance to the Ahmadis of our times- in a context where their elected Khalifatul Massih Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad Saheb has been bereft of Divine illumination. Many devout Ahmadis are now seeking to engage with the larger question of Divine Guidance and revelations with the advent of a Muhyi-ud-Din Al Khalifatullah in this era in the person of Hadhrat Munir Azim Saheb of Mauritius (atba), Soumma Alhamdulillah.

Read the Special Discourse Below:

And when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to place in the earth a Caliph”, they said: ‘What! Wilt Thou place in it such as shall make mischief in it and shed blood, and we celebrate Thy praise and extol Thy holiness?’ He said: ‘Surely I know what you do not know’. (2: 31).

...By the infinite grace of Allah, yester-night (26 May 2018) was not only the death date of the Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) - Hundred and ten years since his demise, but it also commemorates a historical date in the annals of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam, whereby it was on this date - 26 May 2008 (i.e. now 10 years) that Allah gave me the revelation to officially stand up and proclaim myself as the Khalifatullah (Caliph of Allah) and the Imam-e-Inquilaab (Just Ruler/ Leader) of the age. That night was a special night bringing on this humble self a great responsibility vis-à-vis the world and Islam in particular.’

Allah always favours His own Khalifa. Whenever He appoints someone from Him and bestows the Holy Spirit (that is, the Ruh-il-Quddus) on him, it is always His chosen servant, messenger and caliph who shall always be victorious.

Today I would like to explain on the title and responsibility of Khalifa of Islam and on the status of a Mujaddid and Islamic prophet.

As Ahmadi Muslims, coming from the heart itself of Islam preached by our Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and revived by the Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) in the 14th Century of Hijra, all the members of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam present around the world today, and defined as my disciples, and my followers who shall come after me, all must bear in mind the difference between a man elected by man and a man elected by Allah (that is, God Almighty).

You should all remember that a man elected by man who has the approval of God, shall definitely gain the help of Allah and to some extent receive divine guidance through true dreams and visions, for verily the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has said: "The most truthful of you are those with the truest dreams." (Bukhari, Muslim). The clearest example of this truth is the first Khalifa of Islam, who is also the Khalifa of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and whose name we all know as Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (ra).

The first four caliphs after the demise of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) are most truly the first four Khulafa of Islam. They had the exceptional status of being companions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his trusted caliphs after him, such caliphs who had the essence of prophethood in them without them being prophets.

On the other hand, a man elected by man who does not have the approval of God, despite his claims and the claims of all those who voted him that he comes from Allah, and who is himself deprived of Divine Guidance through true dreams and visions and the Ruh’il Quddus, can never actually be the Khalifa of Islam of his time. And he can never lay such claim - by taking the name of Allah, without being severely punished by Allah for such false claims. And if he does not utter the name of Allah, taking Allah as His witness that he is the Khalifa of Islam of his time, then all such claims fall, are baseless because they are not backed by Allah.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has taught us that there shall come twelve Imams (caliphs) after him with whose advent the religion of Islam shall preserve its strength. (Bukhari, Muslim).

Moreover, in another Hadith, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has announced the glad tiding of the coming of Mujaddids, that is, reformers of Islam who shall come at the head of every century, to revive the teachings of Islam. (Abu Dawud).

Now, I must precise that not every Khalifa of Islam is a Mujaddid, especially those types of Mujaddids (reformers) who shall come at the head of every century of the Hijra as prophesised by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). That is why, the first four Khalifa of Islam came one after the other, without the need of being the prophesised Mujaddids at the head of new centuries of the Hijra. And moreover, the Promised Messiah (as) has cleared all doubts concerning this subject by defining himself as the fourteenth Mujaddid of the 14th Century of the Hijra, meaning that 13 Mujaddids appeared before him in each century of the Hijra, the first according to consensus by the majority of the Ulamas and Muslims being Hazrat Umar Ibn Abdul Aziz who was born just some fifty years after the demise of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in the first century of the Hijra.

And moreover, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) also proclaimed to be the 13th Khalifa of Islam who came at the turn of the 14th Century Hijra, the first Khalifa of Islam being Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (ra).

Remember that the 12th Khalifa of Islam who should be on the turn of 13th century is comparable to Prophet Yahya (as)… But the 13th Khalifa of Islam who should be at the turn of 14th century whose name is Promised Messiah.” (Urdu - Roohani Khazain, Volume 17, Page 193)

From the recognised lists of Mujaddids, sometimes more than one appearing in one same century, not all of them have been Khalifa of Islam. But what is confirmed by the Promised Messiah (as) is that the 12th Khalifa of Islam in the essence of Prophet Yahya he was talking about and who came at the turn of the 13th Century of the Hijra is none other than Sayyid Ahmad Barelvi. Hazrat Massih Ma’ud (as) writes:

Sayyid Ahmad Barelvi is the twelfth khalifa of the system of Muhammadiyya khilafat, and is the like of Hazrat Yahya and is a Sayyid.” (Urdu - Roohani Khazain, Volume 17, Page 193-194).

Which means to say that Sayyid Ahmad Barelvi was both a Mujaddid and a Khalifa of Islam. But the difference between Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) and all the other Mujaddids and Khulafa of Islam was that he was also the Promised Messiah, in the likeness of Jesus (as).

And in addition to being all these, he was anointed with the Ruh’il Quddus and came among the people as an Islamic prophet, the first of his kind, for he was the first to have proclaimed to be a prophet of the Muhammadan Ummah, coming not to abort the law of the Holy Quran but to revive it, to revive Islam. Moreover he was the Promised Messiah and Mahdi. And the Mahdi is also a Khalifatullah according to Hadith. And Islamic Mahdis, Messiahs, Khalifatullahs, Mujaddids and Islamic prophets shall continue to rise up till the Day of Judgement.

Allah says in the Holy Quran:

قُلْنَا اهْبِطُواْ مِنْهَا جَمِيعًا فَإِمَّا يَأْتِيَنَّكُم مِّنِّي هُدًى فَمَن تَبِعَ هُدَايَ فَلاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ ۝
Qulnah-bituu minhaa ja-mii-aa; fa-immaa ya-ti-yan nakum-minnii hudan- faman tabi-a hudaa-ya falaa khaw-fun alayhim wa laa hum yah-zanuun.

We said: ‘Go forth from this (state) all; so surely there will come to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My guidance, no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve.’ (Al-Baqara 2: 39).

Therefore, Islamic Mahdis, Messiahs, Khalifatullahs, Mujaddids and Islamic prophets shall continue to rise up till the Day of Judgement in their own appointed eras, whenever Allah feels that that specific time has come, that is, when evil has become widespread, Muslims are not acting according to Quran and Sunnah and the followers of the previous Mujaddid/ Khalifatullah/ Messiah/ Mahdi/ Islamic prophet are not acting according to the Islamic teachings and the advices of their deceased divinely-appointed Imam and Messenger.

It is only then that Allah shall raise another of His Chosen servant and messenger, another Islamic prophet and Khalifatullah to uphold Islam and invite whole mankind to Tawhid (that is, the unicity of Allah) and to abandon false gods.

Now, what is understood by false gods? False gods or idols can be in various forms. They can be in the form of stones, woods, carved statues of past prophets and reformers and even statues of unreligious people taken as partners with Allah or taken as God Himself. The worship of false gods can also be in the form of not praying Allah at the prescribed prayer time and giving any other thing importance at that sacred time. Therefore, pastimes can become an idol if preferred over Allah and His exclusive worship. Worshipping false gods does not only mean to take offerings before a statue and to consider the statue or man-made idol as a god and pray it. In addition to that kind of idol-worship, there exists other kinds of idol-worship. This is what is called concealed idol-worship. These kinds of idol-worship is not done before any statue, but by taking the words and persons of living human beings as much more important than Allah and His commandments.

In the case of the Jamaat Ahmadiyya today, they have taken their elected man-made Khalifa to such levels of superiority that they have become blind to the commandments of Allah from the Holy Quran and the Sunnah and prophecies of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and they have trampled to dust the teachings of the Promised Messiah (as), such teachings which supports the Quran and Islam, such teachings which are mere commentaries of the Quran and Sunnah. For example, without proper divine support, they claim their Khalifa, the fifth Khalifa-ul-Massih as the Khalifa of Islam, they hold the belief that such Khalifa is theQibla to Allah” (God Forbid). They quickly apply boycott systems as per the directives of their man-made Khalifa which is totally unislamic. And they claim that their man elected by men - who is bereft of divine guidance and support - is the Rope of Allah. And especially in the time of an actual Mujaddid, Khalifatullah, and Islamic Prophet, they forgo Allah’s commandment to believe in His messengers to give precedence to a corrupt caliph (by way of faith) of the past Messiah and Mahdi. This is idol-worship, to blindly follow his orders and those of his representatives to break down the vital teachings of Islam and to take him as superior to an actual Man of God who came with the Ruh’il Quddus for the revival of all mankind.

Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, let it be that you become individuals bereft of narrow-mindness. Open your heart and mind to the acceptance of truth. Be you Ahmadi Muslims, Sunni Muslims, and Muslims from other groups of Islam, be you Christian, Hindu, Jew, and of other religious beliefs, let open your heart to the truth of your age before it is too late. Let in the divine light and do not close all the windows and doors of your life to refuse entrance to the mercy and light of Allah in your era.

Islam is the actualization and completion of all divine laws which came in the past. Islam is now the gateway to true salvation, and if in Islam itself you are troubled in your spiritual lives, not knowing which path to choose, then turn to Allah, the Knower of all secrets and the Best Guide. He shall inevitably lead you to the truth.

In this era, I have come as the Messenger of Allah, an Islamic prophet for your own good. I am the Caliph of Allah and of Islam as a whole. I am invested with the Holy Spirit with a worldwide mission unlike the previous prophets before the advent of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and unlike the Islamic Mujaddids who came after Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) with the exception of the Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as).

The Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) is the Khatam-an-Khulafa (the Seal of all Caliphs) and the Khatam-an-Awliya (the Seal of all Saints). This does not mean that he is the last. Indeed he is the first and best among these categories after Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh). Only after Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh)! Neither him nor anyone else can ever be superior to Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) up till the Day of Judgement.

Oh mankind, hearken! Oh Muslims, hearken! Oh Ahmadi Muslims, hearken! Oh my disciples, hearken! Do not repeat the mistakes of the past, because if you do so, Allah shall snatch this blessing from you and institute another Messenger after me and my caliphs (some man-elected caliphs having the support of Allah, and some others bereft of divine support when they attach themselves to power and give this world and the adulation of the people as more important than the divine teachings). I have come in this era. Others like me shall come in the future and this shall continue up till the day of Judgement.

Reflect on all that I have told you today. On this note, I tell you all, Assalamoualaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuhu

May Allah bless you with the capacity to always distinguish truth from falsehood and to always side with the people of Allah and dissociate yourselves from the people of Satan. May Allah protect your souls from going astray and may you all prosper in the love and mercy of Allah. Insha-Allah, Ameen.
