In the opening session of the Jalsa Salana, Mukarram Amir Jamaluddin Raother Saheb presided over the proceedings. YK Hariz Saheb recited the Holy Qur’an, Muhammad Sabir Saheb of Palakkad recited a Nazm. In his Opening Speech, Hazrat Khalifatullah (atba) spoke about the aims and objectives of an annual congregation like the ‘Jalsa Salana’. Drawing copiously from the explanations given in the previous century by the Promised Messiah Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) of Qadian in his writings, Hazrat Saheb (atba) endorsed the noble practice initiated by the Promised Massih (as) and underscored the purpose of Jalsa Salana as an occasion for brotherhood, mutual understanding and shared learning.

THE PURPOSE OF THE JALSA SALANA
My dear disciples and followers, My friends and supporters in Kerala,
Assalamoualaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuhu.
I am happy to be here today, for this special event: Jalasa Salana. Today, my dear ones, I would like to expound on the purpose of the Jalsa Salana which was first initiated by the Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as). In his book Asmani Faisala (The Heavenly Decree) on pg. 74-75, Hazrat Ahmad (as) said concerning the Jalsa Salana:
“This
gathering will be devoted to the exposition of such truths and
spiritual insight as are necessary for the promotion of faith and
certainty and spiritual understanding, and there will be special
prayers and attention for the participants. And to the best of our
ability we shall endeavour to supplicate at the threshold (doorstep)
of the Most Merciful that He may draw them towards Him, may accept
them and may bring about a pious change in them. An additional
benefit of these gatherings will be that each year new entrants to
the Jamaat shall, by being present on the fixed dates, get to know
their brethren who had joined earlier. And these meetings will lead
to progressive strengthening of the bond of mutual love and
affection. Prayers for absolution will be offered for brothers who
will have passed away in the interim, and supplications shall be made
at the threshold (doorstep) of the Glorious God that He may unite all
these brothers in spirit and banish all estrangement, dryness and
differences from amongst them.
This
spiritual convention will have many other spiritual benefits which
will become manifest from time to time. Those suffering from paucity
of means (poverty) would be well-advised to plan ahead for attending
this Jalsa. If they lay by a small sum on a daily or monthly
basis, through planning and saving, they will have enough provisions
for the journey, and it will seem as if the journey was undertaken
free of cost. Those who approve of the proposal should inform me now
in writing so that a separate list can be made of those who are
resolved, for the rest of their lives, to attend the gathering on the
specified dates with all their heart and soul and with the greatest
resolve—unless it is simply beyond their power and means to
undertake the journey. May Allah grant a goodly reward to those who
underwent the travails (difficulties) of travel to attend the
convention which was held on 27th December
1891 for the purpose of religious consultations. May He reward every
step they look upon this journey. Amen, Amen.”
Furthermore,
in his book Majmoo’ah Ishtiharat Vol. 1,
Pg. 340-341, he says:
“The primary purpose of this Convention is to enable every sincere individual to personally experience religious benefits; They may enhance their knowledge and due to their being blessed and enabled by Allah, The Exalted – their perception [of Allah] may progress. Among its secondary benefits is that this congregational meeting together will promote mutual introduction among all brothers, and it will strengthen the fraternal ties within this Community…
It is essential for all those who can afford to undertake the journey, that they must come to attend this Convention which embodies many blessed objectives. They should disregard minor inconveniences in the cause of Allah and His Prophet (pbuh). Allah yields reward to the sincere persons at every step of their way, and no labour and hardship, undertaken in His way, ever goes to waste. I re-emphasize that you must not rank this convention in the same league as other, ordinary, human assemblies. This is a phenomenon that is based purely on the Divine Help, for propagation of Islam.”
From
the extracts which I have put before you, it is clear that the
Promised Messiah (as) fully endorsed the importance of an overall
meeting for all members of his Jamaat, so that during his lifetime
and after his death, they may continue to strengthen their faith and
their bond of brotherhood and remain united in faith.
Sometimes due
to illness and unforeseen circumstances someone may not be able to
attend the Jalsa Salana, but a sincere believer should try with all
his might to attend the fixed date of Jalsa Salana for his country. During
the times of the Promised Messiah (as) it was fixed for three days:
27, 28 and 29 December. But let me tell you, that even if it is not
possible for you to organise it for three days, then even if it is
for a single day, everybody should make the necessary efforts to come
and meet in one brotherhood. Learn Islam together, share your
experiences and your knowledge without any animosity. Be like
brothers of one same set of parents, but without the brotherly brawl
(quarrel).
Listen
to the Holy Quran and its explanations, the Hadiths and speeches.
Learn and try to imbibe these teachings in you. And those delivering
those speeches also should comply to what they are saying and become
like a role model for others to follow. Be pious, and not corrupted
human beings.
Bear
in mind my dear ones, you have come forward today in one brotherhood,
you the new buds of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam. Now, it is for you
to bloom in beautiful flowers in the garden of Allah. For this,
Taqwa, and a committed feeling and intention to Islam is very
important, and what is also important is implementing those good
intentions into action and bringing the Jamaat of Allah further
towards the fulfilment of our mission, to reunite mankind under the
banner of the Tawheed (i.e. the unity of Allah), and be truly
submissive to Allah. Insha-Allah.
Therefore,
my dear followers, follow the advices of the Promised Messiah (as)
and this humble self the Khalifatullah of this era. I could not have
better explained the need for you to save your money, little by
little, so that it does not become a burden for you at the time when
it is needed for you to spend in the way, and this included saving
your finances to attend such an annual spiritual gathering which
shall bring you lots of blessings.
As
the Khalifatullah, it is my duty to encourage my disciples to
preserve the Sunnah of our beloved prophet Hazrat Muhammad
(pbuh) and also the practices of the Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza
Ghulam Ahmad (as).
May
Allah bless our Jalsa Salanas in an exceptional way like He did
during the lifetime of the Promised Messiah (as). May each one of you
taste the exquisite love and nearness of Allah and stay close to Him,
come what may, till your last breath on earth. Insha-Allah, Ameen.
