If and when you travel through the land, in your own country, or in the nations beyond, you will encounter remnants of earlier peoples in those places. When you study archaeology and historical records, you encounter the stunning reality unfolding in front of you: many of those communities before us met their decline after achieving the heights of earthly grandeur.
Several
factors testify to the magnificence of those lost peoples. It is likely, and
the Qur’an certainly alludes, that they were more numerous than others, and
produced impressive achievements in various spheres of life: superior military strength; extensive economic
and trade relations- both on land routes as well as sea-borne ships; cultural prestige
and architectural marvels and other refined, literary and artistic expressions.
The cause
of decline and fall of nations is not far to seek. According to the Qur’an, in
times of prosperity, nations encounter and fail questions of ethics, fairness, justice
and moral compass- in their relations with other nations as well as with the subjects
within.
If a thirst for greatness drives them to excel in their chosen fields of earthly knowledge, it is likely
that they revel in their secular systems and scientific enterprises, to the extent of declaring self sufficiency and autonomy. When delusions of grandeur
engulf the leaders and elites of the land, they commit excesses in the
land, without due regard for the rights of others; drunk with power and pelf, they will revel in untruth and run wild in
arrogance and domineering. The Qur'an warns against the inevitable corruption
of earthily riches: ‘Do not be dazzled by their movements back and forth across
the land, (making wealth by trading)’. [40:5).
The Qur'an
indicates that national decline and fall is often a slow process; yet when the
moment arrives, it arrives decisively, to end the last vestiges of inequity and
falsehood. It is the conscience-keepers of a society, and the saintly figure who
emerges in such morally-darkened times who could guide the nation in the crossroads
of choices. Instead of appreciating the wisdom of fair conduct, they try to shoot
the messenger himself and block their own access to a moral compass, betraying contempt
for those who caution against the perils of excesses.
Every
arrogant tyrant rebel against what is fair, reasonable and just. If national psyche
is lured by projects of domination over other groups, their scheming only leads
to collective ruin. Waging war against another people they come with generalized
violence and diabolical plans to ensure erasure and enslavement of the other: ‘Kill
the sons of those who believe with him; spare only their women’. [40:26] In the
name of nation's security, these tyrants commit war crimes, crimes against
humanity and they justify ethnic cleansing and genocide.
It is
in such times that a critical mind, a public intellectual, a conscientious
soul, a Divine servant will remind his people: "My people, as masters in
the land you have power today, but who will help us against God’s might if it
comes upon us?" [40:30] ‘God never wills injustice on His creatures’. [40:32]
In our own times, since the year 2000, Imam- Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam International Hazrat Muhyiuddin Al Khalifatullah Munir Ahmad Azim (aba) of Mauritius has been carrying on with a Divinely-entrusted mission of reminding leading nations to shun the path of evil and arrogance, of excesses and domineering preferred by powerful players on the global stage. He invites to the pure path of God Almighty, to the way of the Righteous, to the benefits of just dealings and compassion for all; warning about the Days of God and our accountability for all our deeds. Only a few join in the companionship of an Elect of God in his time; may Allah (swt) bless and flourish the nation of believers in this world and the world to come, Insha Allah, Aameen, Summa Aameen Ya Rabb'il Aalameen.
