'Nizam-e-Jamaat': Questioning Injustice

In his Friday Sermon of 28 June 2019 ~24 Shawwal 1440 AH, Hadhrat Imam Muhyi-ud-Din Al Khalifatullah Munir Ahmad Azim Saheb (atba) of Mauritius spoke comprehensively on the human responsibility to respect and abide by Divine commandments at all times, especially in the times of a Divinely-raised messenger among them. Dereliction of duty in responding to the Divine Will and wisdom behind the lofty Message, particularly our arrogance and hubris in ridiculing the Messenger to the extend of 'shooting'/expelling him from our midst would bring in Divine punishment in unexpected ways. Revolting against the Divine Gift of a Prophet/ Messenger/ Reformer/ Inviter to the sublime path of Renewal in the name of blind veneration of one's own priests and chiefs will inexorably and inevitably corrupt an entire community's spiritual future.  

Drawing on his own searing personal experiences of going through blatantly  unfair treatment, social boycott, loss of livelihood and much injustice at the hands of the leadership ('Nizam-e-Jamaat') of the 'mainstream' Ahmadiyya community (the Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya)- that he served with dignity and distinction for a decade and more, Imam Muhyi-ud-Din (atba) speaks to remind the truth to the 'powers' that be, by asking fundamental questions on their very spiritual identity and their institutional malpractices: the nature and character of their 'faith'; sense of fairness and justice; respect for Islamic laws on employment-related obligations; non-compliance with the rule of law in the country; failure to settle termination benefits under labour law; their empty rhetoric on 'love for all, hatred for none', etc. 

Despite their ego-massaging lofty capital-city building projects in England these days, deep- down, the Nizam-e-Jamaat knows that their empire of caliph worshipping/ unquestioned authority of the leadership over the common Ahmadis is facing tumultuous times, especially with Allah (swt) raising a 'Saviour'/ Liberator/ 'Messiah'/ 'Mujaddid' for the enslaved Ahmadis in our times. With the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam making sure progress in India and elsewhere, the Nizam-e-Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya is indulging in a PR-exercise of 'addressing' long-standing grievances against the high-handedness of officials amongst Mauritius Ahmadis. Speaking against that backdrop, Hadhrat Khalifatullah (atba) also unveils for the first time a very important document that throws much light on the unIslamic ways and unjust practices of the Nizam-e-Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya in our times.

The Divine Law v/s the Law of Man

Today people are giving their idols way much importance than the Divine Law. It is man-made laws that are destroying life on earth and destroying the divine teachings. And man has established his laws so forcefully that the one who does not show any obedience to them [i.e. the man-made laws and instructions], therefore, such people go to the extent of taking sanctions against those who do not follow their laws.

When divine laws are being replaced by man-made laws, the world is paying the consequences of this waywardness. Today when man has drifted away from divine laws and is giving much more importance to the laws of man, look what is happening in the world, in a country, in a society, in a Jamaat, in a family, in your environment.

Those who take themselves as scholars/ savants/ intelligent people, they are putting their own ideas and opinions forward and they have pushed aside the divine laws, and unfortunately the people who are following them are going towards their own lost, and their fear of God has disappeared. Instead fear for their Guru (Chief/ Leader) has gripped their hearts, and this is verily what has annihilated faith for the Almighty in the hearts of these people.

They start fearing man more than the Creator. All that they do, they do it only to reap the pleasure of their Guru, in their deeds and works, and there is nothing that they do to reap the pleasure of Allah. That is why, wherever you look, there is no peace, and evil has surfaced on earth. It is then that Allah (swt) manifests His wrath to wake up the consciousness of man (i.e. to make man realise his mistakes/ misdeeds) and make him understand that there is only one God.

Thus, only the Law of Allah (swt) can ever stop this deterioration in our daily life. Divine Law has proved itself more than 1400 years ago and is still proving itself right with the advent of an Envoy of God with the Holy Spirit (Ruh’il Quddus) to bring back all people to the unicity of God, on the right path and to revive the true teachings of God.

'Zikrullah': Remembrance of Allah

My dear daughters,

Assalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakaatuh.

Congratulations to you all for your special meeting this 23^rd June 2019. May Allah purify your intellect and enable you to educate yourselves and all our Siraj Makin members with utmost devotion. Ameen.

Today I would like to expound on the importance of Zikrullah (Remembrance of Allah). Allah talked about the importance of His remembrance in many verses of the Holy Quran, among which, He says:

Remember Me, and I will remember you, and be thankful to Me, and be not ungrateful to Me. (2: 153).

You need to know that Zikrullah is very important in one’s spiritual life. Zikrullah is the food of the soul. Remember, Allah loves us, and craves for our love also. He wants us to remember Him always, in any and every situation which may crop up in our daily life. Be it in happy days and sad days, Allah should always be in your mind, to thank Him and to ask of Him to give you the strength and courage to deal with all problems of life and to advance in spirituality, and to become a sincere and pious help for His cause.

The help of Allah is vital for the success of a cause. And the most vital of causes is the Cause of Allah. We women and girls of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam should never forget to remember Allah and to give Him thanks and be grateful to Him.

We should always thank Allah, for everything, even if it be a problem or calamity, because Allah knows what is best for us. He guides us to unimaginable situations to gauge our faith and reaction, to see if we are really sincere towards Him and His Divine Manifestation. Many of us have lost many things in the path of Allah, but in return Allah has promised us a goodly reward, be it in this world and the hereafter.

So, you must not be discouraged. Keep up your connection with Allah through your obligatory Salat (prayers) and the voluntary prayers as well, and recite His attributes. Seek Him through His attributes.

'Shura': Consensus for Progress

My dear disciples,

Assalamoualaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakaatuhu.

It is my pleasure to address you few words for your bi-monthly Siraj Makin gathering at the Noor’ul Islam Masjid at Mathra on 23 June 2019. Alhamdulillah, it is indeed a good practice that you have undertaken to meet often and to maximize your time in learning, to interact among yourselves and to better yourselves spiritually. Keep it up, Insha-Allah.

Shura: Consultation in Islam

I would like to address you today on the importance of Consultation in Islam. Like you know there is a special chapter on this subject, known as Ash-Shura (The Consultation). A Shura is basically a grand meeting involving all members of a community coming together to reach a mutual decision concerning several matters of the community. In Islam, in the absence of the Messenger of Allah, people should consult each other and take the opinion of everybody – especially those who are directly connected with the matter – so that the best decision may be taken. Allah (swt) even advised the Holy Prophet of Islam, Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) to consult the people on certain matters, and to take his final decision. For during the times of a Divine Manifestation, the final decision belongs to Allah and His Messenger. 

Allah says in the Holy Quran:

“It is out of Allah’s mercy that you have been lenient with them. Had you been cruel or hard-hearted, they would have certainly abandoned you. So pardon them, ask Allah’s forgiveness for them, and consult with them upon the conduct of affairs. Once you make a decision, put your trust in Allah. Surely Allah loves those who trust in Him.” (Al-Imran 3: 160).

As you know, there are many people in the world with many ideas and mentalities. In the times of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), as with all the Messengers of Allah, they had to deal with all kinds of people, from among their own followers and also those who rejected their divine mission and message as well. Allah knows that His Messenger’s work is carried out with His stamp of approval and guidance, but not all people understand the essence of it.

It is therefore capital that in this era, under my leadership as the Khalifatullah of this era, my disciples, men and women know how to deal with situations in their personal as well as spiritual/ Jamaat lives so that they may better serve the community of Islam, and ultimately humanity as a whole.

A Ta’lim Majlis at Mathra-III

Siraj Makin, the women’s collective of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam, South Kerala (India) organized a One-Day Ta’lim Majlis (Divinity Study Program) for the benefit of its members at the historic Noor'ul Islam Masjid, Mathra on Sunday, 23 June 2019 ~ 19 Shawwal 1440 AH. The special study session essentially sought to build upon the earlier initiatives and meetings of the Kerala Jamaat this year- the programs of 09 February 2019 & 19-20 April 2019- to provide the members an opportunity for collective learning/brain-storming so as to keep them aware of the Deeni Ta’lim.

Members of the Jamaat who were present in the programs include Sadr-Siraj Makin Haseena Masood Saheba; Rajeena Sadiq Ali Saheba; Sofiya Beevi Saheba; Naib Sadr Fauzia Jamal-Zain Saheba; Faezah Maryam Zain; DA Zainul Abdeen Saheb of Karunagappally; Na'ib Amir/Jamaat Sadiq Ali Saheb; Sulfikar Ali Saheb, Zachariah Ibn Zain; Munir Ahmad Azim (Jr.); Zaki Mubarak Aziz Raother, etc. Siraj Makin members such as Raziya Hariz Saheba (Alappuzha) and Mubeena Sabir Saheba (Palakkad) were informed well-in advance. However, those members conveyed their inability to attend the program when contacted over telephone.

Mukarram Amir/Jamaat Janab Jamaluddin Raother Saheb presided over the Open Session held early morning- soon after the Fajr Namaz: the message from Imam- Jamaat Hadhrat Khalifatullah Munir Ahmad Azim Saheb (atba) of Mauritius and also the special discourse from Hazrat Ummul Mu’mineen Fazli Amena Varsally (International Sadr-Siraj Makin) were discussed in that common session where Fazil Jamal saheb provided a Malayalam translation of the Special Addresses for the benefit of all members. Then, Mukarram Amir Saheb provided a detailed commentary on the special speeches, Alhamdulillah.

In his Special Address, Hadhrat Khalifatullah (atba) spoke on the importance of Shura (the system of Consultation in common affairs) in Islam. In his discourse, Hadhrat Khalifatullah (atba) notes the importance of the spirit of accommodation, mutual interaction and conciliation of differences of opinion in collective spiritual life, community welfare and progress. To live the ideals of the Jamaat, members need to develop and nurture fraternal affinity and solidarity bonds beyond cultural, regional and linguistic barriers. Such outreach with our fellow members is critical for developing a sense of unity, belongingness and community cohesion; helping one another with the spirit of Taqwah, to advance the cause of Islam and shared humanity. In this context, Hadhrat Khalifatullah (atba) commended highly the recent initiative by Mukarram Amir Jamaluddin Saheb of the Kerala Jamaat to visit and nurture solid bonds with our brothers in Tamil Nadu, and Hadhrat Saheb (atba) also encouraged the women members of the Jamaat also to consider every opportunity to develop such sisterly bonds across the borders through personal visits as well as through social media linkages possible in our times.

The 'Ocean' of Divine Favours

The Value of the Sea/Ocean in this World

The sea/ ocean is a creation of Allah (swt) that contributes to the well-being of humanity. It is full of signs of Allah for one who has the ability and intelligence to reflect on its wonders.

The ocean is an extraordinary means of transport, a means of subsistence also thanks to its fish, its salt, its purity, and its tides. It is a universe in itself, and it is a world of opportunities also through the exploitation of pearls, algae, minerals and so on. The sea is also a great sign of Allah and we must reflect on this extraordinary sign that Allah has granted us. The sea is huge and it has very important roles to play. One must appreciate its role of regulator with respect to the atmosphere, the formation of clouds and the terrestrial climate.

The Sea as a Means of Transport

Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an - It is a long verse of which I will mention only the part where Allah speaks about the sea: “Indeed, in…the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people… are signs for a people who use reason.” (Al-Baqara, 2: 165).

“And of His signs are the ships in the sea, like mountains.” (Ash-Shuraa, 42: 33).

Previously we relied on the sea for transportation, to travel from one country or place to another. There was no plane and so at the time of the Holy Prophet (pbuh), he (pbuh) predicted that just after him, there would be the development of stable ships at sea.

It is reported by Bukhari that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said, “Some of my followers were displayed before me as warriors fighting for Allah's Cause and sailing over this sea like kings on thrones.” (Bukhari).

Today’s ships can carry hundreds of tons of goods without hindering navigation. The Quran has described them even before their appearance in history.

“And to Him belong the ships elevated in the sea like mountains.” (Ar-Rahman, 55: 25).

A Visit to Tamil Nadu Jamaats

Ever since the formal establishment of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam in Tamil Nadu, especially with many of our brothers and sisters from the  neighbouring State joining Imam-Jamaat Hadhrat Muhyi-ud-Din Al Khalifatullah Munir Ahmad Azim Saheb (atba) of Mauritius and the respected and honoured members of the holy family for the Kerala Jalsa Salana at the Noor’ul Islam Masjid at Mathra last December; it has been the ardent wish of the members of the South Kerala Jamaat to go and meet our brothers in their own villages. Alhamdulillah, by the Grace and blessings of Allah, Mukarram Amir Jamaluddin Saheb of the South Kerala Jamaat; accompanied by Naib Amir Sadiq Ali Saheb, Secretary Tabligh Sulfikar Ali Saheb, and this humble blogger- recently had the opportunity to visit our brothers in Tamil Nadu- at Kottar and at Meleppalayam/Tirunelveli, and also to visit the site of the proposed first Mosque of the Jamaat in Tamil Nadu, the Siraj-um-Munir Masjid Project near Papanasam; 15-17 June 2019, Soumma Alhamdulillah.

As part of the first-leg of the tour, the south Kerala Jamaat team reached Kottar, a small-town near Kanya Kumari, the southern- most point in mainland India. Having met some of our Jamaat members at Kottar; the Team extended the journey to Meleppalayam/Tirunelveli Jamaat as well. Since two of the team members had not yet been there, the journey was also extended to include the proposed Siraj-um-Munir Masjid site near Papanasam, Alhamdulillah.

Post-Ramadan: Faith Matters

Our distinguished guest [Ramadan], granted to us by our Creator, has left us. In truth, the blessed month of Ramadan has ended and a new month has come to us: the month of Shawwal. Sad for some and a Joy for others - especially those who do not really have this spirit of sacrifice. They are relieved that this month [Ramadan] is gone and they can now return to their old ways.

For a true believer, it is true that he is sad to see this month [Ramadan] go but it is also an opportunity for him to continue in the accomplishment of his good habits that he started during this month blessed and continue in this good way throughout the year. And then, he makes sure that all his actions, and his thoughts are directed to Allah and to acquiring His pleasure.

In this present century, the century that we are living, these rewards are doubled, even tripled, and so on, because the one who receives the opportunity and the blessing to accept the Messenger, the Caliph of Allah – the Caliph sent by Allah with the Ruh’il Quddus (the Holy Spirit) - then this one is very lucky. It is because during his entire life, during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, he receives this special Laila-tul-Qadr [equivalent to the length of his life (a normal/ average human life) on earth]. He becomes a witness of miracles and signs of Allah. And he receives a nearness with Allah that others have not received, and he receives this thanks to his connection with the Messenger of Allah through the Ruh’il Quddus. His entire life is not only like the month of Ramadan, but more precisely that holy night of Laila-tul-Qadr. And the greatest Laila-tul-Qadr that the Sahaba (companions) in the time of the noble prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) received, is the chance they had to live in the time of the greatest Messenger from Allah and they had the honour, the grace and the blessing to remain sincere with him and to die in the way of Allah as true believers. Among them were also many hypocrites, but their plots were in vain and it is Allah and His Messenger and the sincere Muslim believers who have won the victory.

'Eid-ul-Fitr' Sermon 2019

WHAT IS EID-UL-FITR ?

Here we are gathered again by the grace of Allah for a new Eid-ul-Fitr celebration.

The word ‘Fitr’ means breaking the fast. It is from the same source that the term ‘iftar’ is also derived. Eid-ul-Fitr means the festival celebrated at the end of the fast of Ramadan. After a month of fasting, Shariah calls for a day of joy. A day when it is imperative to eat and be joyous. Fasting on this day is forbidden. (Bukhari).

It’s a moment to share love in serenity with family and friends. This is the moment when the family gathers around a table to share the symbolic breakfast that distinguishes the day of Eid from the usual days. It is reported that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) ate some dates of an odd number before going out to offer the Eid Salat.

At the time of the Prophet (pbuh), Eid was synonymous with unparalleled enthusiasm and gaiety. In fact, Eid’s days are the only festivals that Muslims can celebrate. Note that Eid is celebrated with an extra Salat. So a Muslim celebrates with more prayer thanking his Lord for all the favours He has poured upon him. It’s time to fraternize, to show generosity and to forgive. With a pure heart [upon returning from Eid prayer], we come home to spend the rest of the day with our family.

The Future of Chagos and Agalega

The sovereignty of, and territorial rights over, the Chagos Archipelago is a matter of contention between Mauritius and the United Kingdom for more than half a century now. Before granting national independence to Mauritius in 1968, the retreating colonial power played shady games to retain its strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region. As it happened, two years before the granting of Independence, the colonial power decided to retain a land foothold in the region for the longer term and hence excised the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius. During the pre-independence political negotiations between Mauritius national leaders and the British government, the continued British-control over the Islands was legitimated through questionable deals- thanks to the obvious unequal bargaining power between the parties- the Conquerors leveraging their heft of power and their political subjects on the negotiating table desperately seeking freedom from colonial yoke. Through offering best relations beyond independence, paying 'peanuts' as immediate compensation and a vague promise of returning the Islands to Mauritius at an unspecified future date when the facility at the Islands would no longer be needed for 'defence purposes', Britain sought to retain its control over the Chagos Archipelago for the indefinite future. 

Responding to global shifts in power and the emerging equation with the US in the post-second World War/ Cold War  scenario, the UK later through a bilateral agreement, leased the strategic Islands to the United States for establishing its grand military base in the heart of the Indian Ocean- the Diego Garcia Naval Base. Almost in parallel, within a decade (1967-1973), Britain ensured that Chagossian villagers were systematically and stealthily ousted from their homes and lands permanently, without any opportunity of returning to their homeland forever! British national security and strategic interests trumped over the rights of poor and vulnerable islanders. Even as the Big Powers- the United States and the United Kingdom- consolidated their strategic interests and military control of the region, the hapless Chagossian people were left to languish in the wilderness of their own catastrophe- in mainland Mauritius, Seychelles,  the UK and elsewhere. No wonder, the British colonial excesses in the region continue to scar the national spirit of the formerly subjugated people, the Chagossians in particular.

'Laylatul Qadr': Unveiling Holy Mysteries

“In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful. Surely We revealed it on the Night of Majesty; And what will make you understand what the Night of Majesty is? The Night of Majesty is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by the permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” (Al-Qadr 97: 1-6).

One day the Holy Prophet Hadhrat Muhammad (pbuh) related the life of a saintly person who was called Shamsoon (ra) who lived among the Bani Israel. He had done acts of worship of all kinds and holy war for a period of a 1000 months. Listening to this story, a Sahabi (companion) pointed out to the Holy Prophet (pbuh) that the longevity of his Ummah (community) is shorter than that of Hadhrat Shamsoon (ra). The Sahabi also pointed out that one cannot do the same amount of Ibadat (acts of worship) as Hadhrat Shamsoon (ra). It was at this time that Hadhrat Jibra’il (as) appeared and recited the Surah Al-Qadr (Decree).

The Benefits of the Night of  Decree

According to Hadhrat Abu Huraira (ra) and other Hadith narrators, during the night of Qadr (Laylatul Qadr), innumerable angels descend on earth and because of this, the gates of heaven are opened. At that moment, the lights shine, the special manifestations occur, the celestial world is unveiled. People can then contemplate it in varying degrees (depending on their ability / the spiritual level which they reached and the degree of their faith - Iman).

Teachings for A Blissful Life

The Book of God, the Holy Qur’an, contains enduring teachings, useful for our every day life. The wisdom underlying those ethical principles are so profound and so true that it is by following those teachings that humans can hope for remaining on the correct and straight path of spiritual quest- the Way of seeking God. In his writings, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) of Qadian used to provide fascinating interpretative expositions on Qur’anic verses in order to substantiate and illuminate his spiritual themes. While not a literal translation of Qur’anic verses, these explanations of the Promised Messiah (as) often tease out the subtle points of wisdom contained within those verses in a succinct and accessible language for everyone. 

Reproduced below is a collection of Qur’anic verses, as explained by the Promised Messiah (as), revealing the ethical and moral universe in which God expects and invites man to abide by, so as to enable him to attain a blissful and heavenly life in this very world.

1. ‘God commands you to abide by justice and fairness. But if you wish to attain greater perfection, then treat people with compassion and do good even to those who have done you no good. And if you aspire to even higher perfection, then be of service to others out of personal sympathy and natural impulse, without any desire to win gratitude or to put anyone under obligation, and be kind to them just as a mother is kind to her children out of a natural urge. God also forbids you to commit excesses, to remind people of the good you have done them, or to be ungrateful to those who have been kind to you’. (Al-Nahl, 16:91).

2. This theme is further elaborated in the following verse: ‘when the truly righteous feed the poor, the orphan and the captive, they do so selflessly, only out of love for God, and say to them: ‘We only serve you for the sake of God, from you we require neither gratitude nor reward.’’ (Al-Dahr, 76:9-10)

3. With regard to retribution or forgiveness, the Holy Quran teaches us: 

The retribution for an injury is an injury to the same extent. Tooth for a tooth, eye for an eye, and abuse for an abuse, but whosoever forgives — and the forgiveness results in reformation rather than mischief, and he who has been forgiven rectifies his behaviour and desists from evil — his forgiveness is better than retribution, and the forgiver shall have his reward [with God]. It does not teach us that, having been struck on one cheek, we should in all circumstances turn the other cheek also, for this goes against true wisdom. Doing good to an evil-doer can be as unjust as doing evil to a good man. (Al-Shura, 42:41)

4. The Holy Quran further says:  

i.e., if someone is kind to you, show him even greater kindness. All rancour between you will thus turn into a friendship so close that it borders upon kinship. (Ha-Mim al-Sajdah, 41:35)

Prophecies as Tests of Faith

By the grace of Allah, during my visit in their country, my disciples witnessed many divine revelations – such revelations which Allah (swt) had sent down on this humble servant – messages which comes from the Heavens. And whenever Allah (swt) sends a message on any matter/ subject, it may be that you think that this shall come to happen fast or really fast, or you hope to witness that divine manifestation and you can even say with certitude that this revelation/ prophecy shall be realised whereby the one mentioned in the revelation shall have a ghastly end and humiliation.

But when these kinds of people/ believers do not see it happen after witnessing the divine message, and if they have a weak faith, they get upset and they can even stop putting their trust in their Creator. There are even some people who lose faith and leave the fold of the Divine Manifestation.

Like the Quran mentions, for those who had weak faith in the times of the noble and holy prophet – Muhammad (pbuh), when the latter told/ prophesised something, this was not realised on the spot. Therefore, read the Quran and you shall see what these kinds of people used to say: “Allah and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusion!” (Al-Ahzab, 33: 13).

Allah (swt) tried them at the same time but they lost patience and got many bad thoughts on Allah Himself as well as His Messenger (pbuh) – and this verse also applies in all epochs of Messengers/ Elects of Allah.

The Dangers of Tobacco

A person should take care of his health not only during the month of Ramadan but also all life-long. Ramadan is a golden opportunity to stop smoking. 

Most smokers are aware that they may have lung cancer, but few suspect that they are even more vulnerable to heart attacks. Most people who suffer from heart attack in the age group of 30-45 years are smokers. But what is more serious is that a smoker who has a heart attack is more likely to lose his life. I hereby mention a list of the damage caused by smoking.

Cigarette Smoking: Health Effects

1. Accelerates the blockage of the arteries.
2. Deprives your blood of at least 15% of its oxygen.
3. Pulses the heart while narrowing the blood vessels, causing overstrain in the circulation.
4. Increases the risk of malformation of babies whose mothers smoke.
5. Children of parents who smoke are more exposed to flu and bronchitis.
6. Pollutes the atmosphere and cause harm to your family.
7. Decreases sperm count and is responsible for sperm malformations.
8. Causes lung cancer.
9. Increases the risk of coronary thrombosis, paralysis, and gangrene in the legs.
10. Delays the healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers.
11. Causes acute and chronic bronchitis in the lungs.

Even ‘mild’, low tar cigarettes increase the risk of heart and lung damage, so do not be fooled by advertising.

In Mauritius 58% of men are heavy smokers while among women the percentage is in the 7% range - which is very high and it is not surprising that Mauritius breaks all records in cardiovascular diseases, especially among men.

One must stop smoking, but how?

First,  decide to stop. Make a firm decision. If you are not mentally prepared, you will not succeed.  

Second, Make a plan of action.

Third, Fight against this evil. Join a group of non-smokers. Do a lot of sport.

Forth, Take the month of Ramadan as a starting point. It is truly a golden opportunity to stop.

Ramadan Days: Rules of Conduct

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous.” (Al-Baqara 2: 184).

In Islam, the fasting of the holy month of Ramadan has been ordained for the believers to completely adhere themselves to God Almighty and to revive each parcel of faith, love, kindness and humanity which resides in the profoundness of their selves. Ramadan comes as a motivator, a catalyst for the steadfast servant of God, to propel him to follow the divine commandments and change his life and habits to reflect that of a true Muslim.

If God Almighty has ordained fasting for all humanity and for all faiths since the dawn of time, it is most certainly for their own benefit. In Islam, God has perfected the practice of fasting and established it for an obligatory one month period to incite all healthy Muslim believers to leave behind all negativities of their lives and to start afresh, giving them the necessary guidelines through the Holy Quran and the Sunnah (practices of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)).

FASTING & TRAVELLING

Allah says in the Holy Quran: “(Fasting is) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (with hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that you fast, if you only knew.” (Al-Baqara 2: 185).

Indeed our Almighty Allah has our goodwill in mind. For the travellers such as for someone taking a short or long flight [or travelling long distances by train etc.], they have the option to pay the Fidya if they are not able to fast, due to their health problems and the inconvenience that travel may bring. But, if they feel completely able (completely healthy) to fast even in these situations, they may fast.

Now what do we understand by ‘FIDYA’? It is a religious obligation for every Muslim who has reached puberty and is unable to fast for the required number of days and who is also unable to make up for the missed fast.

The Fidya or compensation for missed fasts is important for people who for very valid reasons cannot observe the fasting of Ramadan. It represents the value of the same type of meal you consume. For example, for each day of fasting missed, an equivalent of Rs. 100 (Mauritian rupees) – or the value of meals for a day (at least 2 meals a day) – should be given to the poor. The latter will then be able to buy adequate food to observe the fast.

Do not confuse Fidya and Fitra. The Fitra is a one-time payment – for one day only – that you make and that is based on the same value and quality of food that you consume. The Fitra is payable only once on each head. It is obligatory for everyone, even for the baby who has just been born. It is even obligatory for this poor Muslim believer who is fasting. You fast or not (even if you are travelling, sick, students, pregnant women, etc.), the Fitra is mandatory. It is not the same as Fidya which represents compensation for the missed day/s of fasting.

'Live A True Ramadan'

Ramadan's Identity

We are living the days and nights of an exceptional month; a blessed month that has a lot of benefits and an opportunity for every Muslim. In order to enjoy it fully, it is important to know what this month symbolizes and what we can draw from it so that we can acquire the divine love and salvation, and hope to enter paradise one day. Insha-Allah.

Our beloved prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) said, “There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast.” (Nasai).

For some Muslims, the arrival of the month of Ramadan is not welcomed because they will have to deprive themselves of food and drink and a lot of pleasures that they used to do. However, for a true believer, Ramadan is synonymous with Allah’s favour because this month is:

(1) The Month of Victory

Ramadan is a symbol of the victory of Islam and the Muslims because it was during this month that the first great battle took place at Badr on the 17^th day of Ramadan in year 2 of the Hegira (AH) between the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) – accompanied by his 313 companions / believers – and the infidels of Mecca and it was the Muslims who came out victorious. It is during this month that Allah chains our worst enemy, Satan, so that each individual can be victorious over him.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, “When the first night of the month of Ramadan comes, the devils and rebellious jinn are chained up and the gates of Hell are closed, and not one gate of it is opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and not one gate of it is closed…” (Tirmidhi).

It is an undeniable truth that our life on earth is marked by a perpetual fight against Satan. He swore to deviate us from our Creator and to enslave us through his many attractions. He desires at all costs to separate us from the Master of the Worlds [Allah] and to make us become his own slaves; like puppets moving at his command. This makes Ramadan an opportunity to free ourselves from Satan’s slavery and avoid his traps. If a person cannot get the upper hand on Satan during the holy month of Ramadan, when does he think he can do it? That is why Allah and His Messenger (pbuh) taught us that through the prohibitions imposed during the holy month of Ramadan, and through our attachment to Allah and spirituality (Islam), we need to abandon Satan and prevent him from attacking us.

So who will succeed in this initiative? They are the true believers! It is for them that the gates of paradise will remain open and the gates of hell will remain closed. Allah gives each of us an opportunity to reform, to take the right path and to keep treading on it. It is for those who will take into consideration these divine counsels and commands that the demon will not succeed in influencing.

‘Taqwah’ Attracts God's Mercy

Islam is an amazingly hope-inducing religion for the human soul. With its invitation to an All Powerful, Most-Forgiving and Ever- Merciful Lord who cares for His servants and believers in this very world (as well as in the Hereafter), Islam provides a fascinating framework of ideas to deal with life’s contingent circumstances, deep disappointments, hopeless situations and other abiding sorrows. The Book of God in particular allows us to let go of despair and be hopeful of Divine mercy through its wonderfully-life affirming teachings: 

‘Do not despair of God’s mercy- only disbelievers despair of God’s mercy’, (12:88). 

‘God does not deny anyone who is mindful of God and steadfast in adversity the rewards of those who do good’ (12: 91) 

‘Is God not enough for His servant ?’ (39: 37)

One of the Divine revelations vouchsafed to the Promised Messiah Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as) of Qadian on the auspicious occasion of the 27th night of Ramadan 1324/ 15 November 1906 reads as follows:  

Qadir hai wo baargah,

tota kaam banaaé,

Bana, bana ya tor dé

Koyi uss ka bhed na jaané

('All Powerful and Almighty is the Lord Allah. An affair that had failed and broken to pieces, He can If He wills crown with success; And He also has the power to smash it up and reduce it to nothing that which stood accomplished and complete. There is none who can read the stupendous import of His profound Mysteries').

Given this extraordinary nature of dynamic Divine Will, the believer's faith allows her to invoke the favour of God, His special Mercy and Grace, through the instrumentality of Duahs. Indeed the Qur’an points to the power of sublime supplications to bring about a million miracles in our everyday secular and spiritual life. Those who are mindful of God and invoke fervent supplications to the Almighty hope to find open the doors of special Divine mercy and grace, transforming the landscape of their material and spiritual fortunes: fatal diseases can move away; family troubles and financial difficulties may be dissolved; mountains of other problems can disappear; even an infertile woman may be blessed with an offspring. Everything is possible, for Allah (swt) is wonderful; a Seeing and Hearing God Who notices what we ask of Him, and watches over our distressed beseeching.
