Evil and Divine Anger

In his Friday Sermon of 02 October 2026~ 20 Rabi'ul Aakhir 1448 AH, Imam- Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam International Hazrat Muhyiuddin Al Khalifatullah Munir Ahmad Azim (aba) of Mauritius calls attention to a vital subject of spiritual doctrine and social life: whether we realize it or not, our national deeds will determine our collective fates, not only in the world to come, but in this very world. A just Lord is never unjust to humans, nor are humans immune to accountability under the Divine Law. Regardless of our notions of self sufficiency and illusions of exalted power and material privileges, when gross abuse of status and space adversely impact wider society, Divine wrath pursues a people given to collective evil. The destruction of nations in the past offer a cautionary tale and clear signs for everyone alive to choose wisely, act moderately, live justly- forbid evildoing, promote goodness, being mindful of God and His commands, notes Hazrat Saheb (aba).

Read the Friday Sermon Below:

Signs of the Wrath of Allah

When one observes creation, one finds that the earth, the heavens, and even humanity as a whole sometimes manifest signs that cannot be explained solely by modern science – signs whose roots lie in divine revelation. In the Quran, Allah has clearly warned: “Say: He has the power to send upon you a punishment from above or from beneath, or to cause you to experience violence at the hands of one another.” (Al-Anam 6: 66)

This verse highlights three ways in which the wrath of Allah may descend: from the heavens, from the earth, and through aggression between people. When phenomena such as disease, drought, famine, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions – or even the transformation of human beings into animals – occur, they serve as a powerful reminder that the wrath of Allah is not far off.

Throughout history, various peoples have already experienced this wrath. The people of Hazrat Nuh (as), the peoples of Hazrat Hud (as) and Hazrat Lut (as), the people encountered by Hazrat Musa (as) – including Pharaoh and his army, as well as Qarun with his palaces and riches – were all destroyed by divine power.

Allah states in the Quran: “And each one We seized for their sin; upon some, We sent a violent wind; some were overtaken by a [deafening] cry; some We caused the earth to swallow; and some We drowned.” (Al-Ankabut 29: 41)

This demonstrates that the wrath of Allah cannot be taken lightly. When people commit sins openly, and when injustice and corruption become the norm in society, divine wrath may descend. Allah has stated that He never punishes a people without first sending them a Messenger – a Warner – to caution them.

An earthquake, for instance, is a sign that directly affects the very earth upon which man walks with pride. According to statistics and scientific estimates, hundreds of thousands of tremors shake our world every year. Yet, Allah has already issued a warning: “Do you feel secure that He Who is in Heaven will not cause the earth to swallow you up?” (Al-Mulk 67: 17-18).

This warning serves as a reminder that the earth does not belong to human beings; it is a trust (Amaanat), which Allah may reclaim whenever He wills. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) predicted that, toward the end of time, earthquakes would increase and strange transformations would occur. Hazrat Aisha (ra) reported that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “In the final generation of this Ummah (community), there will be transformations, collapses, and defamation.” (Tirmidhi). This prophecy is already manifesting in what we observe and experience today.

In another Hadith, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) stated: “People from my community will consume wine, though they will refer to it by other names; there will be female singers and musical instruments in their midst; Allah will cause the earth to swallow them up and transform them into monkeys and swine.” (Ibn Majah).

This shows that disobedience and arrogance toward Allah bring divine wrath upon people. When people begin to normalize sin – when Zina (illicit sexual relations), alcohol, corruption, and obscene music are celebrated openly and on a large scale – then the wrath of Allah may descend in the form of natural disasters or other humiliating punishments.

How can an individual protect themselves [him/ her] from this wrath? The Holy Prophet (pbuh) would always seek protection from Allah – every morning and every evening – against such forms of calamity. He used to supplicate to Allah as follows:

“O Allah, protect me from the evil of what descends from the heavens and from the evil of what ascends toward them; from the evil of what spreads upon the earth and from the evil of what emerges from it.” [Ameen]

Therefore, one must return to the sincere worship of Allah, live in obedience to Him, and avoid all sins that invite divine wrath. There is a Hadith which states: “When evil appears openly among a people, and they do not prevent it, then the wrath of Allah will engulf them all” (Tirmidhi). This demonstrates that the responsibility is not merely individual, but also collective. When society tolerates sin, divine wrath can encompass everyone.

In daily life, people should reflect upon the catastrophes striking the world: droughts destroying harvests, floods sweeping away homes, incurable diseases, and wars devastating nations. All of these are signs of divine wrath. Allah says in the Quran: “Corruption has appeared on land and at sea because of what people’s own hands have wrought... so that Allah may let them taste a portion of what they have done; perhaps they will return (to the right path).” (Ar-Rum 30: 42). This verse clearly explains that natural disasters and social issues can be a direct consequence of sin and disobedience.

An account from history – also found in the Quran – recounts how Qarun (Korah) walked with arrogance, proud of his wealth. Yet, Allah caused the earth to swallow him and his palace. This demonstrates that wealth and power cannot protect a person from divine wrath. Another example is the Pharaoh from the time of Hazrat Musa (as), who declared, “I am your supreme Lord.” But Allah caused him to drown in the sea. This serves as a moral lesson: arrogance and disobedience lead to destruction. The Holy Prophet (pbuh) stated: “This world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the non-believer” (Muslim). This means that a believer must always remain vigilant, ensuring that material comforts do not cause them to forget Allah and their duties toward Him – lest the wrath of Allah befall them.

When one observes the sky, one notices that it experiences moments of storms, cyclones, lightning, and thunder. All of these can be used by Allah as His signs – signs of His wrath. Allah says in the Quran: “And He sends down thunderbolts, striking with them whom He wills” (Ar-Ra‘d 13: 14). This shows that even the heavens can serve as an instrument of divine wrath. When one observes the earth, one may witness earthquakes, collapses, and volcanic eruptions. When one observes humanity in general, one may see war, hatred, violence, and corruption. All of these serve as a lesson, indicating that such occurrences may be signs of divine wrath.

There is a Hadith that states: “When people cease to enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, Allah will send a punishment upon them all” (Ahmad).

This highlights the responsibility to enjoin good and forbid evil – especially during an era of Divine Manifestation, when Allah has sent a representative to warn the people through a humble servant living among them – you – today. This warning is intended to help you take precautions and avoid falling into the traps of Satans – traps rooted in materialism and the pursuit of worldly power. Remember well that when a person develops a thirst for power, Satan pushes them further into decadence and immorality, fostering a craving for authority and wealth – to such an extent that they forget Allah, and forget that they must eventually leave this earth and return to Him.

Therefore, bear in mind that the wrath of Allah can manifest in the heavens, upon the earth, and among humanity. It may appear in the form of natural disasters, diseases, war, violence, or other strange and unsettling transformations. The Holy Quran and the Hadiths have clearly warned us of this. One must return to the sincere worship of Allah, live in obedience to Him, shun sin, and seek His protection every morning and every evening. Otherwise, Divine wrath could descend suddenly, when least expected.

A true believer strives to live in peace and security – a state that is unattainable without obedience to Allah and His Messenger for the present age. When a person disobeys, Divine wrath may descend; yet, if that person returns to the truth, Allah will forgive and protect them [him/ her].

The Qur’an teaches us: “Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves.” (Ar-Ra‘d 13: 11)

This means that change begins from within. If a person returns to the truth, then divine wrath may be lifted. Otherwise, divine wrath may descend with even greater intensity.

May Allah protect all His true servants throughout the world from His wrath; may He show the path of righteousness to those who have strayed, and inspire them to follow that righteous path. Insha-Allah, Ameen.
