the Extracts from the Sermon Below:
KHUTBATUL HAAJAH is a blessed sermon taught and recited by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It is traditionally recited at the beginning of a Nikah (marriage ceremony) and may also be recited at the commencement of important speeches, gatherings, and occasions. It consists of praise of Allah, seeking His help and forgiveness, seeking refuge from the evil of our own selves and deeds, bearing witness to the Oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad (pbuh), followed by verses from the Holy Qur’an.
Alhamdulillāhi, nahmaduhu, wa nastaʿīnuhu, wa
nastaghfiruhu, wa naʿūdhu billāhi
min shurūri anfusinā, wa min sayyiʾāti aʿmālinā.
[Translation:
‘All praise belongs to Allah. We praise Him, we seek His help, and we seek His
forgiveness. And we seek refuge in
Allah from the evil of our own selves and from the evil consequences of our
deeds’].
Man yahdihillāhu falā mudilla lahū, wa man
yudlil falā hādiya lahū. [Translation: ‘Whomsoever Allah guides,
none can misguide; and whomsoever He allows to go astray, none can guide’.
Wa ashhadu allā ilāha illallāhu wahdahū lā
sharīka lahū, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ʿabduhū wa
rasūluh. [Translation: ‘And I bear witness that there is none
worthy of worship except Allah, Alone, without any partner; and I bear witness
that Muhammad (pbuh) is His servant and Messenger’].
Holy Qur’an on our Duties in Life
1.
‘Taqwah’: remain steadfast in the path of God
‘O you
who believe! Fear Allah as He ought to be feared, and do not die except in a
state of complete submission to Him’.[--Surah Al ‘Imran, 3:103].
2. The sacredness of Family ties
‘O
mankind! Fear your Lord, Who created you from a single soul and created from it
its mate, and from the two spread many men and women. And fear Allah, in Whose
name you ask one another, and respect the ties of kinship. Surely Allah is ever
Watchful over you.’ [— Surah An-Nisa’,4:2].
3. Speak Truly, Deal Fairly, Obey God
‘O you
who believe! Fear Allah and speak words that are straight and truthful. He will
set right your deeds for you and forgive your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and
His Messenger has certainly attained a great success.’ [—Surah Al-Ahzaab,
33:71-72].
KHUTBAH ON NIKKAH
Alhamdulillah summa Alhamdulillah. We
praise Allah, we seek His help and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Him from
the evil within ourselves and from the consequences of our deeds. We bear
witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, Alone, without partner, and we bear witness that
Muhammad (pbuh) is His servant and Messenger.
Today is a blessed and sacred occasion. Two individuals of our Jamaat are coming together through Nikah, not merely to share a home and a worldly life, but to establish a relationship founded upon faith, Taqwah, love, mercy, trust and mutual responsibility.
Nikah is a great covenant
before Allah. It is not simply a social agreement or a celebration; it is an
‘Aqd, a solemn bond and responsibility in which both husband and wife become entrusted with one
another.
Allah Almighty says: ‘And among His Signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may find tranquillity in them, and He placed between you love and mercy.’ — Surah Ar-Rūm, 30:22.
This verse beautifully describes the true purpose of marriage: Sakīnah, Mawaddah and Rahmah — tranquillity, deep affection, and mercy.
Marriage
should therefore be a place where two hearts find peace in one another; where
husband and wife become garments for each other, protecting one another,
concealing one another’s weaknesses, and helping each other draw closer to
Allah.
ADVICE TO THE BRIDEGROOM
Dear bridegroom,
Fear Allah concerning the woman whom He has entrusted to you. Your wife is not merely your companion in worldly life; she is an Amaanah from Allah. Treat her with kindness, gentleness, patience and honour. Speak to her with respect. Do not belittle her feelings, ignore her sacrifices or take her love for granted.
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) taught: “The best of you are those who are best to their families.”
Be a husband who brings peace into his wife’s heart. When she is tired, support her. When she is worried, comfort her. When she makes a mistake, forgive her. When she succeeds, be happy for her.
Provide
for her according to your ability, protect her dignity and honour her before
others. And remember: leadership in Islam is not domination; it is
responsibility, service and accountability before Allah.
ADVICE TO THE BRIDE
Dear bride,
Fear Allah concerning your husband and honour the sacred bond that you have entered today.
Be a source of peace and comfort for him. Appreciate his sincere efforts, encourage him towards righteousness and stand beside him during both ease and difficulty.
Guard his honour, protect the privacy of your home, and never expose his weaknesses or private matters unnecessarily.
A beautiful wife is not merely one who beautifies herself outwardly, but one who beautifies her home with good character, patience, wisdom, gratitude and faith.
At the
same time, remember that obedience in Islam is always within what is right and
lawful. A marriage should never be built upon injustice or oppression, but upon
mutual respect and the fear of Allah.
ADVICE TO BOTH
Dear bride and groom,
From this day forward, remember that you are no longer walking alone. There will be days of happiness and days of difficulty. There may be misunderstandings, financial pressures, family challenges, illness and moments of disappointment. When difficulties arise, do not immediately turn against one another. Instead, turn together towards Allah; pray together; make Duah together; forgive one another; speak gently and listen carefully.
Never
allow anger to destroy what love took years to build. Do not carry every
disagreement to your families or friends. Protect the privacy and dignity of
your marriage. And never forget the power of saying: “I am sorry.” and “I
forgive you.” Sometimes these few words can save an entire relationship.
Make Allah the centre of your marriage
The
strongest marriage is not the marriage in which there are no difficulties. It
is the marriage in which Allah is present at the centre of every difficulty.
When both husband and wife pray, repent, forgive and seek Allah’s pleasure,
their home can become a place of worship, tranquillity and spiritual growth.
Build your marriage upon Salah, Qur’an, Dhikr, Duah, honesty and mutual consultation. Help one another become better servants of Allah. If Allah blesses you with children, raise them upon faith, righteousness, good character and love for Allah and His Messenger (pbuh).
Let
your home become a small sanctuary of Islam — a home where the Qur’an is
recited, where Salah is protected, where elders are respected, where children are
loved, and where forgiveness is greater than anger.
The
True Beauty of Marriage
Remember that physical beauty changes with time. Wealth can increase and decrease. Health can become weak. Circumstances can change. But good character, faith, loyalty and sincere love for the sake of Allah become more beautiful with every passing year. Therefore, do not measure your marriage only by what you receive from one another.
Measure
it by how much you are willing to give. Do not ask only:
“What has my spouse done for me?”Also ask: “What have I done to bring peace and happiness into my spouse’s heart?” This is the spirit of true companionship.
May Allah make your home a home of Sakīnah, Mawaddah and Rahmah. May He place Barakah in your Nikah, increase love between your hearts, protect you from Shaytan and every form of discord, grant you righteous and pious offspring, and make you a source of goodness and comfort for one another.
May
Allah grant you a marriage that brings you closer to Him in this world and
becomes a means of entering Jannatul Firdaus together in the Hereafter. Ameen
summa Ameen.
Duah for the newly married couple
Bārakallāhu lakumā, wa bāraka ʿalaykumā, wa jamaʿa baynakumā fī khayr. “May Allah bless you both, shower His blessings upon you, and unite you both in goodness.”
May Allah bless this Nikah with endless Sakinah, Mawaddah and Rahmah, grant the couple a life filled with faith, happiness, patience and mutual understanding, and make their home a place of peace, worship and abundant blessings. Ameen Summa Ameen Ya Rabbul Alameen. Jazak-Allah Khair.
